GT86 vs MX5
Don't know if anyone subscribes to the Autocar magazine, but they have pitted a Toyota 86 against a NC MX5, just got the mag today in the letterbox.
Yes, it was the 86, more powerful (118kw vs 148kw), only slightly heavier by 50odd kg's, handled just about as well as the MX5, had better in gear accelerartion, and most importantly was $15K cheaper (they were testing against the 86 rather than the GT86 which is another $5K more than the standard 86, the TRD86 is over $60K but uses all TRD parts which are expensive)

New 86 Sucks!!! It has almost put me off ever buying a toyota again the lazy bastards should have done there own R&D and made a revised edition of the 4AGE cause thats what made the original 86 so great
Also I can't stand Boxer engines!!
If they pitted it against the 2014 MX5 it would have been a different story the NC is a Boat!

I don't think Toyota have perfected the art of time travel to test against the 2014 MX5...Kieran wrote:If they pitted it against the 2014 MX5 it would have been a different story the NC is a Boat!
I like boxer engines but I wouldn't own one based on my friends Legacy that costs a fortune in servicing billsKieran wrote:Also I can't stand Boxer engines!!

I mean that when it comes out just because the lastest model NC is not a very good example of how a mx5 should beAngreal wrote:I don't think Toyota have perfected the art of time travel to test against the 2014 MX5...Kieran wrote:If they pitted it against the 2014 MX5 it would have been a different story the NC is a Boat!

Funny cos the only things that cause boxer engines to fail areAngreal wrote:I don't think Toyota have perfected the art of time travel to test against the 2014 MX5...Kieran wrote:If they pitted it against the 2014 MX5 it would have been a different story the NC is a Boat!

1) lack of servicing and
2) low octane fuel
Detonation causes oil starvation to the crank and makes them run bearings.
Also the people that tend to own the older legacies seem to really skimp on servicing so when things go south they do so in a hurry and a lot of things tend to fail at once.
My V7 sti was the most reliable car I've ever owned! That thing NEVER missed a single beat.
Cool sunroof bro...
Would still take an NC over an 86.
86 is just the marketing team playing off cult car status of one of their prev cars to try and have their own s-chassis.
New 86 looks ugly. Why spec them with wheels that wouldnt look out of place in a pre 2006 auto salon show?
YUCK.
Will be 35797 middle aged men thinking theyre Takumi Fujiwara.

To do the service/access the spark plugs supposedly they had to drop the engine out. It's the labour bill that was the killerpunkoutnz wrote:Funny cos the only things that cause boxer engines to fail areAngreal wrote:I like boxer engines but I wouldn't own one based on my friends Legacy that costs a fortune in servicing bills

Mazda need a kick up the arse. The nc was barely powerful enough in 2005.now seven years later still no real improvement. My god you can buy a freakin people mover with a turbo engine in it. But god forbid they offer their only sports car with one! Dumb arses!

a 1.3 turbo or hybrid aint gonna get the blood rushing especially in 2015 greeny save the planet emmissions mode....the age of decent sportscars is truely gone. if they cant even make a decent MX5 then what the hell is there left?Angreal wrote:Rumour has it the ND is going for the original no power no weight but fun to drive approach? Mazda totally missed the boat from 2000 onwards by:
a) not offering a PROPER turbo NB. and
b) not offering a factory forced induction NC either turbo or supercharged.
i firmly beleive that mazda built that half assed NB turbo just to say "see we tried a turbo and no one bought it" but it was so badly done and too late in that chassis life that it was never going to work.
lets have a look at mazdas line up....
Mazda 6 TURBO
mazda 3 TURBO
Mazda 5(premacy) TURBO
Mazda MPV TURBO
mazda Mx5...........still frekin waiting

From what I have read about the new one, they are aiming to have the weight under 1000kg's again. As they are doing a joint venture with Fiat (didn't someone say in this forum that the 86/BRZ is crap because it is a joint venture) there is supposed to be some cross pollenation between the two cars, Fiat doing the styling, Mazda doing the chassis handling.
However, apparently they are going their seperate ways for the engine, which is a bit of a shame. Fiat is apparently look at their 1.4 turbo unit out the 500/Panda, which in Abarth mode runs at 118kw and 250Nm, but more importantly, in Corse spec (a tip to Ferrari model in the 500) does 150kw and 300Nm, which would make things a bit more interesting.
I haven't seen what motor Mazda is knocking around and thinking about using, but if I was to guess, some form of their Skyactive engine, which aren't exactly blood pumping engines.

I guess a straight swap for the Fiat engine would be easy?Donovan wrote:From what I have read about the new one, they are aiming to have the weight under 1000kg's again. Yeah that's why I loved Japan. Start at the top right and work your way down to the hard stuff at the bottom left of the menuTimmo wrote:Haha nomihodai means 'all you can drink'Angreal wrote:Rumour has it the ND is going for the original no power no weight but fun to drive approach?
