Smokey engine

I have a friend that bought a 1992 1.6 mx5 a few months ago and the engine has problems. It drives well and seems to have plenty of power.

The problem is if you give it a boot full when you take your foot off the gas and come up to the lights etc it smokes out of the exhaust quite a bit.

Any ideas what the problem is?

Sounds like valve guides/stem seals. On overrun, with a high vacuum in the inlet, oil is being pulled into the combustion chambers.

yeah blue smoke, is it worth rebuilding the engine or swapping it over? Or just drive it until it dies?

i can do them in place without taking head off if your in nelson area?

Wouldnt worn stem seals tend to produce most smoke after the engine has been left shut off for a while? I always believed smoke on overrun usually indicated worn piston rings, for the same high vacuum reasons.

my friend has decided to get the smokey engine fixed.

Can anyone suggest someone that can do this? Looks like its the valve guides/ stem seals.

Anything else that should be done or looked at while this is being done?

Depends on what your friend wants to spend....may as well get the head reco'd at the same time & maybe do the pistons/ring etc if they can afford it but determine first what else needs doing.

You could easily spend $1500 on a reco head & gaskets...three grand doing up the motor.... or less than a thousand for a used replacement.

All depends on what your friend needs are.

If he can do the work himself or get a few people to chip in it shouldnt work out more than a couple hundy even just paying the reconditioners to get the gaskets and shave the head.

Parts stores like repco and supercheap would be first thought - but theyre pretty expensive.
Ring around to smaller parts shops in your area aswell, but in my experience the reconditioners could get it cheaper than i would ever be able to even with their markup.

Try your local BNT automotive or the more Mechanical division of repco,APPCO,Better yet make sure Genuine parts aren't badly priced anyway,Can be surprising some times
