I can vouch for HJC and KBC helmets as I have personally tested them both at speed coming off a motorbike. I'd advise against using this testing methodology though...
I can vouch that Arai are comfortable but I'm not planning to put that one through the rigorous testing regime
All 3 of those comply if you ever decide to get a motorbike. I think there are some helmets that are good for cars but not good for motorbikes/scooters

these guys if you just want an el cheapo helmet, doesn't meet MNZ standard.

If you want a MNZ one, it needs to meet the Australian Standard AS 1698

If you have a $10 head, wear a $10 helmet.
If you are competing on a MSNZ sanctioned event that requires a helmet then you will require a helmet that meets one of the standards defined in the MSNZ Manual.
See section 4.1 pages 9-10

Most motorcycle helmets do not meet these standards

Not neccessarily. I had a car helmet that had hans posts and met a euro motorbike/car generic standard. Raced in it for 2-3 years. This is at National level MSNZ sanctioned events tooAngreal wrote:Wow.Really? Dayum. Safe to say I'll never race cars but I'd rate a motorbike helmet higher than a car one...Euen wrote:Most motorcycle helmets do not meet these standards

I beg to differ, id say over half the helmets that go through scrutineering are motorcycle helmets. Mine is a basic HJC CL-ST motorcycle helmet and that meets the euro 5 standard.Euen wrote:If you have a $10 head, wear a $10 helmet.

I think one of the big things was missed in a post, and that is a HANS device, or at least some sort of neck brace.
If you need your helmet to protect your head if the case comes up that you are going to hit the tarmac in a car, it's pretty much lights out nurse whether you have a $10 helmet or a $1000 helmet. It's there mostly to offer protection from smacking around inside the cabin of the car, and motorbike helmets are going to do that, it is just how long playing pin ball in the cabin it's going to last before it splits open and exposes yourself to the elements.
However your head's heavy, and the helmet adds more weight to that already large noggin, you come to a very sudden stop, and your head doesn't have to come to blows with anything to seriously screw you up.
Not that I am saying go out there and buy the cheapest helmet around, but if you are doing the odd track day in a pretty much standard car, get a good bike helmet and at least a neck brace rather than an almighty expensive and nothing to keep it in place should the worst happen.
And don't skimp on the roll over protection in the car.
Now, let the barrage from the motorsport fraternity begin

No barrage from me Donovan. I agree with you.
Regarding the barrage I got re my comment on bike helmets, I take your point. As long as the helmets meet the standards defined by MSNZ they will be accepteble, maybe I should have used the word "many" instead of "most".
