New Years Turbo resolution help
Hey all,
I am real new to the site for sorry in advance if this has already been a topic of the past or previously discussed.
Basically I am looking at getting a Turbo kit from Flyin' Miata for my 1998 NB sometime in the near future (specifically the voodoo setup with the GT2554R Turbo)
Now, I am fairly mechanically retarded and excellent at procrastinating so I have come to the conclusion to pay someone to do the turbo install and tuning.
So does anyone know of any mechanics or specialists who would be up for the task? and if so how much would I be looking at?
Thanks in advance, any kinda help would be appreciated.

Here's my advice. If you can't do it yourself, you may as well get someone in the know to recommend parts and buy in nz. Have a chat with the person you decide to do the tuning which ecu to use. It's a'll fine and dandy having an ecu but you need someone who can tune it. Have you actually looked at your budget? You're talking a pretty penny to get it done.
Motorsport engineering was recommended to me and from what I've read he wI'll likely be doing the fab work I need.

Hi
My engineer and I in Tauranga, has been flat out doing turbo kits for the MX5's
We normally use the Subaru TD04, but am a fitting a TD05 16g to my NB 1800, in the search for maximum power
The TD04 turbo is great, no lag, full boost under 3000 rpm and still flows enough for 250hp at the wheels on 16psi which is a LOT of power in an MX5
You will be looking around $5000 for a drive in drive out Intercooled TD04 Megasquirt Turbo package
But it's fabricated to the highest standard, and we haven't had an engine go on us yet, despite making almost three times the factory power on some setups.
His steampipe tuned length turbo manifolds are a work of art and despite what some may claim will make or break a turbo setup.
Can also do Driveshaft loops and clutch upgrades at the same time.
If you are in Tauranga, I can arrange testdrives of both Turbo and SUpercharged setups, so you can experience what it will be like.
Guarantee you'll be impressed

Above is a great idea and to be honest, I'd have an extra few grand aside. Nothing EVER goes to plan, no matter how good the engineering etc is. How many km's on your engine OP? Done a compression/leakdown test? You shouldn't need to upgrade the brakes when you cert it, however you'd want some good pads. And remember to keep $500-600 aside for the cert.

TeamJelly - you are Jared? If so - what are your thoughts on a 150-175hp setup? Am I far off the mark looking at the following specs giving it room to make up to 200-220wkw. Also are you doing MS2 or MS3 or am I best to import a DIYPNP and do it myself?
Type of Cooling Oil Cooled
Inlet Size 2.5"
Outlet Size 2.25"
Type of Bearing WET FLOAT BEARINGS
Oil inlet Size 1/8 NTP
Type of wastegate Internal wastegate (default 8 PSI)
Compressor .42 AR Compressor
Compressor wheel exducer: 60.41mm/ inducer: 43.20mm
Turbine .48 AR Turbine
Turbine wheel Inducer: 62.86mm/ Exducer: 45.74mm
Type of Flange T3
Type of Down Pipe Flange 2.5" v-band

Yeah, Ill definitely have to have some money put aside for everything else. What kind of brake upgrades would I need? new disks, pads, calipers and maybe some braided lines? or could I just go with some high quality pads?
Engines done 128,000. Ill do a compression test once im back in wellington.
Yeah, im looking at getting a Half cage put in around the same time, I've seen a bit too many horror stories of upside down Mx5s and the Turbo will only increase that chance IMO.
(Cheers for the imput too everyone, real grateful. )

If you're just going to be doing the odd trackday,
Then we have a very sturdy roll over protection bar available
Only protects the driver, but you can't take passengers at most trackdays anyway.
Definitely a lot cheaper than going for a Half Cage
Bolts right in, and takes about half an hour to fit. No problems with either soft or hardtop
I have them on both of mine.
Definitely do the 1.8 brakes and decent pads at a minimum.
Corners come up pretty fast when you have over twice the factory power.
The Wilwood conversion isn't that expensive though, and the difference between that and stock is night and day.

I am watching this thread with great interest.
Back at about the beginning of December I went over to visit Jared and test drove both his Supercharged and Turbocharged cars and like he said they are very impressive to drive.
I am still struggling with the choice and cannot make up my mind which way to go.

I like the idea of supercharging an NA just for that nostalgic feel... but the NB's seem too modern to supercharge and I reckon would be a bit of an odd match, but thats just my opinionfooesboy wrote:I am watching this thread with great interest.

How's it going mate - from being in a very similar situation myself a few months back except for I had an NA and was looking into turboing it and my conclusion I came to was that without having the expertise to do alot of fab work/tuning/other upgrades like torson diff/bigger brakes/Roll Cage/cert etc etc it all adds up and for what I wanted I stopped counting at about 12k and that was not including the 3.5K I bought the car for.
So in the end I ended up buying an already turbo'd one that was certed with a lot of the upgrades I was after for under 8K and sold my car for pretty much what I paid leaving me with a lot of extra money available for advancing this project further...
Anyway I'm in Lower Hutt if you want to check out a turbo'd NA - so many options but doing everything yourself to your car may not be fully worth it unless it is an immaculate car that you plan to keep as a show car...

Haha yeah.. the supercharger whine doesn't quite have the same appeal to me as the turbo "woosh" haha.
I originally had an NA a couple of months back too and went through the same debate.. it was the leather filled vspec version so it didn't seem right to pair the grandpa interior with a sporty turbo.
Which led me to buy my NB for relatively cheap- I'm pretty happy as its got a few bells and whistles that ive become fond of like the exhaust system, cold air intake and wheels . While, its probably more logical to go out and buy one that's already done, I think ive become a bit too attached to give this one up haha.
Might take you up on that offer of coming and looking at your Turbo NA though, I reckon its always good to see what other people have done- I met a guy with a Turbo NB the other day and was just in complete awe of his setup.

Exactly why I didn't (don't like choo choo) but to each their ownSimonmx5 wrote:Turbo noises are the best. It's one of my favourite things on my other car.
