Here are a bunch of manuals. There are some wiring diagrams in there: http://www.mellens.net/mazda/

now that you have told us that you had the dash apart, go back to where you were working on it and check your connections and have a look for loose pins in any plugs around the area that may have been bumpedmmmbarp wrote:thanks guys I will try have a look tomorrow, the cars been off the road for a while and I have had the steering column trim off to wire a radiator switch so maybe something has happened there

I had this issue a few months back. I ended up changing a bunch of fuses (I think the manuals posted here should get you a list of what fuses do what etc).
Also worth checking the loom under your fuse box in the engine bay. The vibrations that the fuse box went under during driving eventually rubbed the insulation off a wire that ended up shorting on to the chassis causing all the issues for me.

I had a similar problem recently. I had inadvertently unplugged the socket from the centre dash switch (where the dimmer switch would go) on the lower rhs of the steering column.
Turns out the socket needs to be pro properly plugged in as doing so completes a circuit that operates the dash lights.
