Hey guys,

I'm considering a supercharged MX-5 in Tauranga, but not too keen on going all the way down to be disappointed! Is there anyone that's within a close radius to this guy who could possibly have a look at it/give it a once-over?

(can't post link as I'm a new member - it's the red 90' on TradeMe, just type in 'supercharged mx5' in the search bar and it'll come up :D ) .

There are a few members down here (can't remember names) They should be sweet, have you been in a supercharged one before?

Howdy :D

Nope, haven't been in any before actually! I sat in Andrew's one & observed Kieran manoeuvring into his one, but don't think that actually counts haha. I hear they aren't fast, but just from watching some of Kieran's on YouTube and seeing how reliable & economical they are (whilst still being able to have fun with them), they sound more appealing every day. Especially one track day Nana-ing the GTR around Pukekohe and I've already got to drop the gearbox out to replace a release bearing...

Haha welcome ot the dark side :)

I'm assuming you're talking about that red one? It looks tidy, you should go for a turbo though. Easier when you decide to get more power.

Why, hello there stranger 8) I know the SC12s are running at near max flow capacity even with 6-7 psi, but the SC14s can run a significant amount more boost... would you reckon it would be much of a P.I.T.A process to go about swapping out the SC12 for a SC14 eventually as opposed to just starting with a turbo? If I can get similar gains with an SC14 as I could with a turbo (and still have all the good parts that red one comes with), wouldn't it just be better to start with that as the base? or am I going to need to be looking at upgrading quite a few components at the same time if I end up going about the swap?

...and of course I'm not patient enough to wait for a turbo in decent shape to come up, so I just try to convince myself that the supercharged ones can be equally as good. Feel free to shut me down here

Hi Stig. I'd love to help out but am snowed under just at the moment.
I've never seen it about in Tauranga.
The price seems very good and in the photos, it looks reasonably tidy.
I presume you have rung the owner and asked all the relevant questions?
From a 5 minute phone call, you should be able to asertain whether a 2.5 hr trip down is worthwhile.
Cheers Stevo

I'm flat out with house Reno's at the moment too. I've never seen it about either. I've always been very underwhelmed by supercharged cars. It's a good base for a turbo install though!

Hi Stevo, no worries, thanks anyway :) I got all my questions out of the way via text, but I'm generally the person to complain about why someone doesn't just "pick up the bloody phone and talk to the seller to let them know you're genuine". He mentioned he doesn't seem to know all that much about the car in general as the last owner did all the work, though he said the only thing was that the power-steering pump is weak and he has the replacement there - is it a fairly big job to do the swap?

Hey SLYDIT, what can a full turbo kit/setup be pieced together for (as a ball-park figure)?

STIG - If you know what you are doing, 150rwhp can be had for a grand or 2 depending on quality of parts. If you want to look at around 200rwhp (Starting to near the limits of stock internals) you would probably need an aftermarket ECU so add 500-1k + tuning. It's not mental expensive but its hard to do if you can't read turbo graphs or have someone spoon feed you.

That S/C one looks good. Personally the piping etc would piss me off, I'd have to redo it. Make sure there isn't any rust under those roadster door sills, also check the bottom of the A pillar (through the door opening, just under where the top of the front guard bolts to the car), alot of the time they crack/rust there if they've been in frontals.

The state of the roof maybe a $ factor but apart from that I reckon the sum of it's parts is worth more than he's asking! -if it was blue I'd get it!
And in theory it's all ready to go, no mucking around tuning or tweaking.
If it was summer it would be gone, in fact at $6500 with only 135km on it without the SC it probably would sell....well maybe 6K.

-also the P/S pump is easy enough to do and I think the SC14 has different mounting brackets & is a fair bit bigger so wouldn't be an easy straight swap.
I'm not crazy, my mother had me tested.

the price for the K's is quite reasonable ... worth going to have a look at and possibly a test drive in my opinion.

Thanks for the information guys, much appreciated.

Hmm, that's very reasonable. Now the only factor would be the money already spent on the car in other areas as opposed to just starting with a non-turbo and going from there.
I asked the current owner if it had any structural damage and he didn't believe it had anything as he couldn't see any signs of it - which sounds to me like I'd have to check that out for myself, so thanks for letting me know about where to start looking.
I'm hoping he'll come down to $6k for it, but he's firm on $6.5k at the moment, so a little more persisting will hopefully do the trick - it's not a significant difference, but still!

I have a m45 supercharger on my car and for a road car I think a supercharger is perfect. Boost anytime you want it. Sure it is not as fast as most turbo systems but for on road drivability it cant be beat.....just my two cents worth. P.s I have looked at that car on trade me and it looks very nice. You are welcome to come for a ride in my car if that helps?

Man I really have to get my SC12 hooked up, least of all because I stub my toe on it every now and then!

I havn't been able to commit any money to it but havng bought the SC & the Megasquirt to run it but not hooking it up is such a complete waste!
I've got a (very) basic bracket template but really have no idea where to go to get something designed / made up??

Any suggestions or recommendations guys?

It looks to ne a nice car. Certainly worth the money for what it has on it. I would check the Diff to make sure its a 1800 torsen and not just a 1600 vlsd. Probably be a couple grand to covert to turbo. But you'd get some money back by selling off the super charger.

Thanks for the offer, Warrior. I might have to take you up on that actually! would be good to get an idea of what they're like.

Yeah, that sounds like a reasonable price - especially as its already got the Link ECU in there & salvageable components from the existing setup :D

Haha, thanks mate, but Kieran's already kindly offered to do so (if the old man isn't keen on the drive down). He's not in any sort of rush to have the MX-5 in the driveway me thinks, so I may have to take up Kieran's offer. :P
