just got told that anything over -1.3 is excessive camber...

It kinda scares me that these are the people legalizing our cars.
According to Miata.net (which, as with anything online, should be taken with a grain of salt of course) the factory alignment's rear camber is -0.72° +/- 0.5°. That being the case, the maximum factory camber is -1.22° and so the maximum certifiable rear camber (according to the guidelines and without taking into account a certifier's own permissible discretion) for an MX-5/Roadster should be -1.72°.

Which is still pretty tame compared to what you end up with purely by lowering the car.

Well my car has had maybe 1.5" drop (probably not even that) and has been that way fo 10+ years and my rear camber is at 2.3". So technically it wouldn't pass current cert laws...
Cool sunroof bro...

This is the problem, because it would provided that:
2.2(2)(a): “Steering mechanisms and their mountings, or any systems by which a driver controls the direction of a vehicle, must provide the vehicle with safe, efficient, convenient, and sensitive control.”

2.3(8 ): “Low volume vehicles which have undergone significant changes to the suspension system must feature no abnormal suspension geometry, and be aligned so as to provide satisfactory handling characteristics, and ensure against excessively shortened tyre life.”

2.4(1): “All modified production low volume vehicles with modified suspension systems must perform in a manner which preserves at least the quality of steering control which could be reasonably expected when the vehicle was originally manufactured.”
However, it seems the new guidelines (which allow for a vehicle with more than an extra 0.5° negative camber beyond factory tolerances if they meet the above requirements, which were already in place before the change) have cowed certifiers into not feeling able to exercise their discretion within what was the existing framework anyway.

IMO Mu car fits into those "limits" The only one it may be pushing would be excessive tyre wear. But even then, I doubt it. Ffs

Got off the phone to a LVVTA certifier, Lance Walsh, really good guy. And also agrees the camber laws are to strict, however, the penalties are to great for him to certify anything over -1.8 so. shit balls.
