New to MX5 Forum

Post by hlau028 » Sat Oct 20, 2012 11:26 am

Just wanted to say hello to the mx5/roadster community in New Zealand.

I have had my Roadster for just over a year now and have really enjoyed the occasional waves etc from other Roadster/MX5 drivers. Seems like a much better community than my main vehicle Subaru ^^

Below will be some pictures and a descriptions of what I have done so far. By no means was the intention of this vehicle to be a high performing car, this car’s purpose was for daily driver purposes.
As my work is quite far away from where I live (Drive at least 82km’s Mon-Fri) I needed a car that will be cheap to run but also makes me happy to drive.

I will admit that I use to be one of those people that never appreciated these cars thinking they were for as stereotyped “hairdressers” etc. But after I test drove one in high school, I was shocked at how well they handled and wanted one ever since.

Here is what it looked like the first day I went to view it. Purchased it that very same night. I am quite impulsive in terms of these things I guess.

As I drove it home that night. Standard 1989 Eunos Roadster Manual with vLSD. Also came with 1.8L NA alloys wheels which were a bonus I guess. Also previous owner had cut out the mid pipe and welded on a replacement straight pipe with no cat.

Drove it as is for a while but since it was winter, the soft top although it didn’t leak any water, it wasn’t really do a very good job of keeping me warm. So I decided that I’ll get a hardtop. Found on trademe that day and picked up the same day aswell from up North.

Paint on the hardtop wasn’t the greatest but it does its job so I am happy with it for now. And for $950 I couldn’t really complain.

Then I was lucky enough to find some Watanabe RS8 in 14x7 +25 offset which I quickly purchased :D
Also I love Bride Seats, genuine ZETA 3 FIA Approved.

I usually only buy genuine parts for my vehicles but as with the distances I travel with this vehicle, I needed warranties etc for my new suspension setup so I decided that getting BC coilovers was smarter and more economical option being obviously cheaper and with local supplier support.

BC suspension was actually not bad, its alot better than I expected and I would say they are great value for money if you aren’t able to afford Japanese or European made suspension for the time being. My other purpose of this car is for drifting and with these suspension installed, its alot more predictable ^^

I always wanted a wood grain Nardi steering wheel so I was on the lookout for the V Spec Nardi steering wheel which hardly ever comes up for sale. But then I found one from trademe which had a polished centre(think they are called classic). Then offer a price which the seller agreed upon and picked up that very same night. I think he is called “pommy” on this forum.

Puchased the standard V Spec Nardi hud from a forum member “sprsta”

As with my new wheel selection, again they are a replica of the Work Equip 01’s, as I have said before I do feel quite sad that I am purchasing these parts as I usually wouldn’t for my other cars but for the price and sizing, I really can’t complain. My main goal for wheels for this car was actually getting SSR Mk2’s but they are quite difficult to find even in Japan in 4x100 and even when I do find them, they cost more than the car :P maybe when I get a promotion 

As it sits today, all certified.

And my other car of just over 9 years ownership ^^quite dirty in that picture 

Future plans which should be done within this year. Aero to be ordered and fitted, these parts will definitely be genuine ^^ and new top hats.

I know this won’t be to everyone’s taste but I hope to see you guys soon and learn from you. I have been reading this forum for more than a year but have just decided to start posting ^^

Liking those seats. Do they fit well into the car? Are they comfortable?

Hey Furai (Sorry I forgot your name  ) I haven't decided if I am going to the next skidpad day yet :( it'll really depend on the weather etc. Saw that you got new Bilsteins and Watanabes :D . Wish R type Watanabes were more readily available in 4x100 :(

The boot spoiler came with the car and to be honest, i do not know what car it was originally from. But it does look decent for now :) Planning to replace it with a KG Works Duckbill very soon also with Garage Vary front lip :D anyone else interested in a group buy from R Speed from the states?

The Bride Zeta 3 is quite comfy, most likely because I am use to it by now since my Subaru has the same seat but in Black. Fitment wise I would say it is a bit big for our MX5's. The shoulder support area is very wide on a Zeta 3 and my one is only giving about 1 to 2mm clearance to the door cards with adjustment to the transmission tunnel at its maximum.

As I am using the standard seat rails, it sitting position is the same height as our standard seats. but the problem with this is that the seat itself is alot taller than our standard seats therefore fitting a cage is going to be difficult which with my option of a Safety 21 bolt in cage, I would either need to sit very close to the steering wheel like how my mum would drive  or not install it at all which is what I opted for.

This is because the seat would hit the rear bars/legs that bolt to the boot floor. Haven't really looked into getting lower seat rails as I quite like the standard sitting position for daily driving unlike my Subaru where my eye sight is actually at the steering wheel.

Names arent important  (Kieran)

Yeah Watanabes are hard to find in any good size PCD100, are you keeping your RS-8s?

They are easily available just not cheap :D

If you are looking for a cheaper alternative to the GV lip. Alex@MLRacing can get in the ebay style copies. Paid $200 for mine landed which is great value, and removes the hassle of dealing with ebay shipping yourself. Fast service and it is exactly what I was expecting (not 100% quality or fitment, but its a plastic ebay lip, what do you expect?)

Pics are on my build thread on CR and NZHondas if you want to see them :)

Yeah the bars definitely limit the movement of the seat, even the standard one. I have to take my shoes off otherwise my legs cramp

Hey Kieran :) Yeah I am going to keep the RS8's as my spare wheels.

Thanks Snapfrozen for the headsup :) , I'll look into that option but most likely I'll get genuine items from R Speed, might aswell.

Oh yeah, as for reliability issues, I have to change the clutch slave cylinder and also clutch master cylinder. I believe these are a common issue with our cars be it NA or NB.

And also one of the main fuse blown as the previous owner hardwired the radiator fans to the diagnostics plug

I had my slave cylinder go on me as I was approaching and then crossing the Royal Oak roundabout. Not pleasant, but managed to limp it across!

Piece of piss to change though :)

when you change the master, put some coppercoat or similar on the circlip that holds the cylinder in the barrel. the circlip gets fluid residue on it and it rusts...then the master doesnt return to the correct home position.
