Hiya all, yes I did speak to Brownie the other day, and all looked ok on first glance. We discussed a few option for having various items that he gets in and notifying people. He isn't trying to annoy anyone obviously, but just let people know of the cool stuff he gets in, and

This is a community...so we can all discuss... and a few people have asked publically and to me privately (no one has sky written anything from a biplane yet though... so if anyone is planning that let me know what time to look up) as to the point of having a thread for this... especially when mr z spent a few long weekends setting up a classifieds manager.

so...Is there a reason why the classified section is not a good place to just post these items? I guess the way brownie is doing it there can be some open banter on each item submitted (omg a rear vision mirror the length of my car!)... and of course I'm always looking for a way to improve things.

With the "classifieds section", when you post something and I have set it up so that people are notified immediately by email if they subscribe to the "Classified Announcements" topic. There is even a 'comments' part of the classifieds to enable people to ask questions.

However I'm wondering if a better way to do this would be
a) Only allow buy/sell in the classifieds section.
b) Have a new topic that each new item is automatically posted to. That way people can ask about, drool over, or otherwise discuss each new product in a standard forum session.

discuss... now

I guess this is the one line summary of my long post... why is doing this better than just using the classifieds?

I find the for sale section easier to navigate if its just integrated into the forum like most other forums - see NZHondas for an example. It works well. Its simple. And you can use tthe forum search tool to find specific things you want. Having a thread also saves the same question being asked a million times. Because you cant see whats been asked in the current classifieds you might get 3 gazillion questions asking what offset your wheels are. Etcetc.

I like it how clubroadster/miata.net do it (but I don't like it because I keep spending money buying stuff online  )

The listings here are good though how new stuff pops up at the top of the homepage (probably not so good for the websites I mentioned before as they get a much larger volume of items being traded).

Both work well, in the case of this thread i think its a good idea, alot of items from 1 place/person all in the same thread rather than spread out across the classifieds.

For 1 off items the classifieds is pretty sweet as it wont spam up the classifieds notifier at the top of the page.

I like this setup its the same way Rod from Tetsuya Garage does it on ClubRoadster

If people are bothered by this they obviously have nothing better to do than complain if you dont like it dont look at it you know what this thread is!

Either way Brownie keep posted parts!

IF i did ,That would go in the classifieds,as it's my own.But i won't ,Not this puppy.I've really got to get a good boot lid to put it on.

I did ask Howard if he could,in the classifieds set up a thread where i could keep adding to,as i'm doing here, but in the classifieds,That way other suppliers could do it too,if they want to,Broomfish/MX5 mart....,I thought this would work in the mean time.
I do find this way easier to work with,I don't have to worry about add's expiring and forgetting to update and most parts will be JDM so nice to to have a bit of history to see whats around and available sometimes.
In world terms we are a small forum and apart from Ross (MX5Mart) we don't have too many used specialized parts suppliers interested in our favorite car to foul up the forum.
I'm lucky my boss doesn't mind me doing this,Yes i'm making a buck for my work,But i'm only doing this as i'm a BIG fan of these cars myself,as most of you know.
That's enough for a Friday from me and my thought's,I go back to having my after work beer or 3.

P.S ,do i keep posting Z ? ,got some more juicy bits to add

Well since this has turned into a discussion I will submit my ideas for the pot...

I tend to agree with the "use the classifieds section". This may work for awhile but as more people start posting (I "think" we are gaining in popularity..?) threads will drop down quicker and be hard to find.

THAT is one reason I think the classified section even exists.

Second reason is that the classifieds is where people go to look at things for sale....not threads.

Thirdly, not only will tracking this thread become harder over time, this thread is getting long already with other stuff/comments (I am not helping with this post I realise). Finding and tracking what is and isn't gone will require trawling through pages of posts eventually.

Fourth - If one person can do it the question will come up, why can't someone else....?

In saying that I do like looking at what Brownie is putting up and have nothign personal against him or the company. I no doubt will buy product from him in the future!!!

Just would prefer to see one rule apply to all.....

Think you need to have a look at other popular car forums, Mad Kiwi....

Not a single other car forum I use has a classifieds section....

They all just have a seperate forum for buy and sell.

The sellers start threads and can 'bump' them to the top to keep them active. It works very well.

If you have trouble finding the threads you are looking for, I suggest the search function.

I like that the classifieds section oon this website pops up at the top of the page when you log in, however IF this site was to gain popularity (lets be honest, most mx5 owners are girls who dont care about forums, or old men who dont have the first clue about the internet) the classified section at the top would become hard to navigate and theres a high chance of missing something.

Buy and sell section of threads in the forum plz. And a set of guidelines for them:

For example:
Your title needs to have "FS" or "WTB" in it.
It needs to have a location "AKL" "WGTN" etc
It needs to have an accurate description of the item- not just "Wheels and tyres" needs to be "15x10 SSR wheels with tyres"

Full title should end up being a hell of a lot more informative
'FS - V8 Conversion kit for NA mx5 - Stewart Island"

So the current and working classified section is there to....
- Confuse people..?
- Just be one of many places to look for parts for sale...?

While other forums may not have a classified like we do, I doubt they are posted willy nilly in the discussion forums..

The ones I have seen have a "Classified" or "For Sale" thread "section"..... (may as well call that a classified section then aye?), So sorry I have to disagree with you.

Not only that, I think you will find most forums actively discourage sales of items via the discussion pages.

edit: On re-reading, In fact you have said the same thing!

Here is an example of how things are done with a vendor on another forum.
It works great!

http://astinagt.com/forums/showthread.php?t=10668

This makes it easier to see all the parts and discuss them. Other forums usually do a section formatted in the general banter way but obviosly towards Buy and sell rules etc.

I think we are going to need to have a vote on this one or something. But I'm definitely in the for it camp. As many people have mentioned the standard forum format is having threads for for sale items. This is because we all like to check these things out and it's nice to be able to discuss them. I don't know of a single forum where the for sale section isn't the most read part.

While I agree that the classifieds are the best place, I don't have any objection in principle to the thread however it would be better if the communication between the interested party and the vendor, in this case Mazline be kept to PM or email. That way the thread would be easier to follow as it would only contain the goodies that Brownie has for sale (and no drooling).

Okay, further to Furai's post.

Why not have a trader section as in Furais example?

I like the for sale items AND the ongoing discussion but don't think it's place is in the general discussion area....far too messy.

People like Brownie, Ross, Broomfish etc could do with the extra (for want of a better word)..."publicity" and then the general classifieds is for our member / pleb sales....

This all IMO of course....

I did ask Zorruno if he could,in the classifieds set up a thread where i could keep adding to,as i'm doing here, but in the classifieds,That way other suppliers could do it too,if they want to,Broomfish/MX5 mart....,I thought this would work in the mean time.

Just to re iterate what i originally thought, anyway,Zorruno was going to look into this for me,When he had time,
I think there has been more "Discussing" than what i've actually posted FS now ,Now this thread is getting mucky and the fun is being taken out of it,
After all,We are all here cause it's a bit of fun ?.
It's not big business for my work,Trust me on that,Just nice to be in touch with enthusiasts as well, and giving you guys first shot on cool/unusual bits bits.
As been said before,
If you don't like the thread,Don't visit it,Sounds pretty simple to me.
Sound like 1 user getting their way over the majority that do enjoy it.

I think you have this wrong, I like the idea of you promoting parts for sale, but I don't want to troll 3 page stock to see what they are. If I'm looking for say an "exhaust" I can just click the classifieds, exhausts and bingo, any for sale are listed, FFS it even tells me how many are advertised. HOW SIMPLE IS THAT.

In terms of the long thread, you miss the marketing opportunity as some won't want to troll through and as its it is getting very messy already.

Simplest solution here is to have a 'for sale' and a 'wanted' section, with some rules around use:

New post for each sale item and post title to have "keyword" of item such as "exhaust" in it
Once sold post title to be edited as "sold"

How difficult, still get the ability to discss in fourm style, keeps items individual, let's us know when sold or still available.

Come on who is dictating the forum, sellers or enthusiasts.

I can understand your opinion but sometimes Im not looking for an Exhaust and I just wanna browse through whats avalible.

If I go into the classifieds Im generally looking for something but If I forget what im looking for (The list is always long) threads like this are great.

I dont think you need to get to excited over it, its working for most of us if your not happy with the way these items are advertised thats okay, personally this is great!
