For those who think an NA build is a good idea

Post by Kieran » Fri Jul 20, 2012 3:26 pm

I just have to say I feel so bad for this guy its still a good read
This is taken from his build thread
Project 200HP All Motor
http://clubroadster.net/vb_forum/showth ... ost1287738

SOoooo. I finally went to the dyno today and tuned it.
If everyone remembers, i made 173whp before. Since then I have added:
-Boig header. OBX before
-custom SPD collector
-Artech exhaust
-custom jesse prather cams with tons more lift than the toda cams I had
-filled the injector holes ( they just had plugs in them before)
-custom crankase evacuation system.
- no to mention all the money ive spent for custom fabrication, parts, fluids, materials, labor, machinework to re-do the head etc...

Verdict: $4k later and I only made 11 more hp (184whp). Wow. I am fucking pissed. Extremely dissapointed and gutted.
I have well over $10k (maybe $12k, i havent been keeping track) and I barely have as much power that i could get by bolting on an ebay turbo kit on a stock engine.
I am extremely embarrassed!
I dont know why I can not meet my goals.
Even jimmy made 184whp (albeit on a different dyno) with the same tuner as me. And his motor was not half the motor that mine is on paper. He was running the same compression as me, however stock bore (im .080 over), he had stock valves (mine are 1mm over). His cams had less lift. his header was an inferior design to the boig. His engine wasnt even balanced. he had an untouched factory crank and rods.
im at a loss...
I think I want to sell the car now. I just bought an 09 g37 sport sedan last week and im loving it

Wooow... That is dissapointing!

Could have done a sr20, 1uz or a turbo! For less than that :/

Stunning looking car though

I wonder what sort of torque he is making, and the curve.

Power is one thing but how it comes in and how much torque you have is something else.

In saying that the cheapest way to get more NA power is always an engine conversion...

I've done the NA game, never ever again would i bother. I spent 10k on an engine and got the same power as the guys running $1500 turbo bolt on jobbies. As fun as 9500rpm was, I could never get past the fact I spent 5 times as much to get the same thing. Plus I had to wait till 5000rpm for my power to come on while as they had it all on tap by 3000.
Cool sunroof bro...

the 1600 head design is just dcrap really. the only way to get HP with it is to PUSH air into it rather than suck it. (theres a pun there i think) 8)

The main problem is that the B6 and BP were originally designed as turbo engines so have not been optimised for NA. The later (99+) BP heads were improved a bit but it is still a struggle to get good power out of them. Ask me how I know? (rhetorical question)

Take the money out of it and I'd rather that over a Turbo with the same power. Yeah torque... but I like revs. Sue me.

I really like the look of the car too.

Tim.

For those of you with the time to read it, the MX5Nutz forum in the UK has a thread about a build of a serious NA NA being built for circuit racing. The thread is quite long but some of the engineering that Malcolm has put into the car is really impressive. He has just had the car on the dyno and achieved a preliminary figure of 199bhp, about 167rwhp. That is about 28hp more than I am getting in the TG.

I read that one a few weeks ago, what a mission I think it was 70 odd pages...but full of interesting stuff....

If he couldn't get 200 how was this other guy ever going too....?

They stopped at the 199 hp because of a possible gearbox problem and a resonance in the crank sensor. There is still more to come. Apparently Rebello in the US dyno'd the engine at 230 (flywheel)
