Rattle can jobby

Post by chris » Wed Jul 18, 2012 10:18 am

Anyone used a rattle can to paint the car? O.o

I just got my baby resprayed, and dad wants his done, so we were going to do his at home.. I am going to try the headlight cover first, obviously I'll take my time with prep, but I am going to try a rattle can and see how it goes...

Anyone tried it? And don't knock it. It is an idea, and the paint is pretty ass anyway!

you might do it but you would need enough cans to successfully complete each panel at a time all pre-shaken!

I'll see how just the head light cover goes :) I might do it in a bright yellow :3

I mean, chances are I'll get a gravity feed spray gun anyway haha

tried this on the hardtop (BRG, yurgh...) and it looked fairly good I thought, although it did tend to leave slight rain trails afterwards.

Cheers for the reply! :) I was going to take a while doing each panel properly :) No need to hurry, so hopefully I can avoid any drips

Make sure you prime it and scotch bright/sand it properly, Prepsol the surface before any paint or primer hits it (Prepsol is a wax and grease remover)

You want thin even coats to build up a couple of layers allowing drying time between each layer and then make sure you clear it if you want it to look half decent.

The more paint layers you built up the easier it is to polish up and remove imperfections before clearing, just don't over do the paint layers or it will probably all go horrible eventually. Same deal with the clear, build up the layers so you can buff out any small runs etc just don't over do it

Tried this, it's so damn hard to get it looking right. The cans just don't have a big enough spray pattern and it's really hard to get a good overlap. I have a gravity fed spray gun that I've had about a million times more success with than spray cans.
Cool sunroof bro...

That's the way I was thinking too! Plus I am starting with the head light cover, so if I screw it up, not to much damage was done :P

Still need to decide on a colour

My experience with rattle cans is that they're fine on smaller panels, but larger panels are a pain in the ass for the reasons punkoutnz mentioned.

I think you could do a pretty sweet job with spray cans if you took your time.
My only suggestion would to be remove the boot and bonnet and do them standing vertically cos spray cans don't like to spray on much of an angle.

Here's the thing. You can get a reasonable finish with rattle cans, but, it wont be as good (looking or durable) as if you used a spray gun, and by the time youve bought enough primer, and top coat, you may as well have bought some 2 pack, a gravity gun, and borrowed a compressor.

After a bit of reading I have to agree and scrap my thread :P

Time to buy a gravity feed!
