And the class/series? (looks to be RX7).

Here's Julian's last email to me.

HI everyone,

After a successful weekend at Taupo racing, the MX-5 Race Series now re-focus’s on the United Travel Race Series at Manfeild. 4 rounds, 12 races, 1 Champion.

We have launched a MX-5 Facebook page http://www.facebook.com/MotorsportManawatu#!/MX5RNZ to keep everyone informed, plus we have some great racing footage from Taupo as well. You can see this from these links

In 2012 the MX5 will be racing in the RS Cup series, but will not be eligible for points in that class, nor will breakouts apply either. Once we establish sufficent cars they will run by themselves. (hopefully 2013 Winter Series) We will be attending the Pro7 AGM and put forward our regulations for adoption, giving the cars a summer race place as well.

MX5 Racing NZ has a bright future, and we hope we can get you all involved over the next 12 months. Please remember that if you have a car that is out of specification you can still run it, we simply take off points for the modifications, but allow you to race.

We also have the Manawatu Toolshed starting this Sunday at Manfeild if you are looking to take your MX5 for a run!.

Cheers

Julian

Hmmm, wonder how far out of specifications they allow, whether they would allow my car. Guess if they were taking points off for modifications, I would have to come first in every race for the season and still be unlikely to get out of negatives

I agree, Donovan if your winning on track take it and just enjjoy it. Stuff the points!!!

That being said, won't this class require a full cage...?

Yes, it does require a full cage.

For anyone interested in the new MX5 racing series, here's the latest from Julian Hardy of Motorsport Manawatu:

Hi Everyone,

Jeff and I attended the Mazda Pro7 racing AGM on the weekend and we have been given the green light by Pro7 to start on the grid for this IRC season. Additionally the NZ Championship for Pro 7 is held over 2 rounds, 1 in the South and 1 in the North. The South Island Round is Oct 14 in Timaru, and I have looked up ferry prices, which we get a discount for being part of the MSNZ family.

If I told you I was excited about going to Timaru I would be lying. I am SUPER excited about this. We will create a trophy for the NZ Mazda MX5 Champion, and the winner will be presented with this trophy at the final round, the NZ Grand Prix. No bigger show to put on a great show.

This budget is a really basic idea of what each round will cost you. Motorsport Manawatu can supply you with AMB transponders for the rounds you attend for $20, something you get for being a member of the club. This will save you $50 a round in Summer.

If you can advise how many rounds you might do next year, can you let me know, it will be good to try and get as many as we can to all rounds, but realise it may be a struggle.

As the summer season gets going, we will keep you informed about progress and other opportunities that we can create to help get you to as many rounds as we can. Remember to find and like the MX5 Racing NZ Facebook page and the Mazda Pro7 Racing page as well, and while you are there, click the IRC series as well.

Thanks, and may you all be “topless” this summer

Julian

Hi Guys - that's my video in the first post.

The series is pretty basic and we're open to accepting any entrants.. Although an LS V8 may be a little excessive (there's one with a 302w engine that runs in our sprint series for you to battle though...)

Here's my latest video from Manfeild last weakend - I ran out of brakes in qualifying and ended up doing race 2 and 3 on Silverline front pads - yuck!

Paste this code into the youtube search bar: FQLTrim5Wkk

We're looking at doing the whole series now and working out the budget - we'll be doing the Pro7 national champs meeting at Timaru, NZGP at Manfeild and TRS meeting in Taupo. Looking forward to it!

If anyone has questions about the cars or series, just ask here. I'll check the forum every couple of days.

Cheers!

Looks like a very cool series and I wish you all the best.

I would love to be involved but a full roll cage is just not viable for me at this stage.

Keep the posts coming though, loving what you have put up so far!

You never know, race reports, costs etc will tempt me at the very least, hopefully others...?

Mark.
