i know i sound like a broken record here but.....

when you remove the air con pump bracket you MUST replace the front bolt that goes through the front alloy housing with a shorter bolt. that front bolt clamps the oil pump to the block. if you dont fit a new bolt you are asking for a big oil leak or an engine failure (or both)

Yep thats right-both the housing & the thermostat comes off the front of the engine and is a straight fit.

I had my local welder fit the old heater tube that came off the original rear housing & then i threaded the ID for the hose barb.He blanked off the sensor hole as you can see in the earlier pic.

Actually the crankshaft pulley is off a gtx-they split in two allowing to discard the front half [which i dont need as i dont have air con or power steer]....just a bit more unnecesary weight loss.

you need to take the heater hose barb BEFORE!!!!! the thermostat
or you will not have any flow to the mixing manifold (or through the engine)when the thermostat is closed

when i did it i used the begi diy coolant reroute spacer
http://www.bellengineering.net/product_ ... b187e7274e

heres a link to help make it easier
http://revlimiter.net/blog/2011/05/coolant-re-route-1/

here is mine on
Image

i removed my heater and plumbed the heater hose back to the top radiator hose (takes longer to warm up but supposedly keeps it cooler)

Image
i spent ages trying to find the correct hose and eventually Born_desterbed found it at Bunce for me

Image
and here it is finished

cheers

Hi Sprsta

Funny thing is i have copied the gtx set-up as i remember it plus from that site you mentioned it says....

"quote"
Moving the coolant exit back to the rear of the head (re-routing it, if you will) puts the system back to how it was originally engineered in the 323.

And also it says....

"quote"
and lets water flow to the heater core before the thermostat opens.

So does it matter about the heater core not being heated until the thermostat opens?
I was always under the impression the thermostat was designed to stay closed when cold to bring the motor up to temp quicker & then open to give circulation to prevent overheating?

I cant see why it shouldnt work but i will investigate further to be sure!

Sprsta wrote-or you will not have any flow to the mixing manifold

If you dont turn on your heater then you get no flow anyway[or at least thats what i know}The mixing manifold is there purely just to re-mix the heater water circuit.

There are cars around that have the heater removed so i cant be important to the engine?

{need to find a place to hide just in case i get flamed badly!! :D]lol.

the gtx has the heater coming out of the intake manifold not the back of the head IIRC

the heater core is always open in a MX5 (ever noticed your feet hot even with heater off?) it is used to keep movement of the coolant in the block untill the thermostat opens

without any flow past the thermostat, it wont open till the coolant that is right next to it gets hot enough even though the coolant at no1 cylender is boiling

the spacer also has ports for the temp sensors
so the fans turn on at the correct time and the ECU sees the correct temp when its warming up

I havent got to the stage yet of re-fitting both sensors as i was going to put the engine back in first to see where's best to put them.

Ok then to be safe i shall tap into this unused water outlet that is before the thermostat & use the grommet to plug my brass one! :D
