Welding courses

Post by chris » Thu Mar 29, 2012 8:50 am

Hey guys, I know I'm new here and etc..

I was looking at doing some welding courses (night courses) in Auckland, wondering if anybody else could be keen? Could be a good skill to know to touch up rust areas add flares etc..

If anyone is interested I'd be quite keen to do more research into it?

Could be interested in this, as I've often considered it.

I think it'd be a good skill to know :)

I will do a bit of research on night courses and prices soon

I think Unitec does them from memory, and I think, if I recall, it was somewhere around the $500 mark? Could be way off, mind you!

Definitely a useful skill to know, especially if you make the investment into a welder for your own use at home or have access to one elsewhere!

They aren't TOO expensive.. like you can get a medium duty home DIY welding unit for $99.00 at the moment from Super Cheap..

And if Unitech do them for $500.00 I think it' a worthy investment.. plus maybe we could get the cost down if we had a few guys from the club going?

I did the unitec course a few years ago as part of my engineering degree. It didn't take long and I think we only spent two sessions on it doing tig welds and arc welds. At least I know a good structural weld when I see one.

It all comes down to practise and I have this ability to put the welds NOT where the joints are :p and make them super messy but I'd rather pay someone to do a good job than do a horrible one myself tbh. Mind you I think I'd demand a bit more when it comes to welding just due to my field. Just my 10c worth

I have read that practise is key, any structural rust I'd defo pay someone to do :P

I was just trying to find a welding and / or engineering night class just the other day (with no luck) I am very keen to do something like this. Especially being taught to weld aluminium....

Come on, surely you just point a tig at it and voila...?

Thats why I want to do a course. Steel to start and then gain access to the whole night course thing and go from there. Access to a kitted out engineering department is also part of why this course interests me...

Folders, cutters, benders, welders etc...Oh the things you could make....

I did a very basic course that was run on Sundays at Glenfield college. I think it was run over 3 weeks by Glenfield Community College. Covered gas, arc, mig and Tig. As a starter it was very good. For me it was a refresher and intro to MIG/TIG. Having said that I haven't really done much with it since then although I bought myself a MIG last year as a birthday present with the intention of building a trailer.

It looks like they have a couple of courses planned in May/June. Check out http://www.gcc.co.nz/ and click on General Courses.

Wow, $150.00 beginners course...1 session.
$200.00 Intermediate.....1 session.
Bloody hell I could pretty much buy a welder and mess some steel up (whilst learning) for that... so long as i don't blow up or elecrocute myself would be all good to go...
