I noticed Flyin Miata have a discount going for their braces so I figured I would pick me up one. I'm trying to work out how to get it back to NZ though...

I have just receviced mine on Saturday, I emailed them and they sorted very thing out for me, they gave me two options for shipping, if I were you I would take the cheaper one even though it will take abit longer. As the dearer option will put you over the $1000.00 NZD by $8.00 and then you will have to pay GST and duty of $198.00 NZD. I hope this helps

Is $1000 the threshold?

I wouldn't have thought that they would count shipping costs for import Duty.

Yes $1000.00 is the threshold.
That includes shipping and the goods.
So dont get caught like I did all for $8.00.
it cost me a extra $320. NZD

sorry but i dont think $1000.00 is right, I think it is quie a bit lower than that. I think it may be around $600-$700 as I have been done for that amount. Check with NZ CUSTOMS on there web site or call them

I think legally they can do any amount but they dont usually bother under $400ish

According to the customs website GST is payable on all goods imported. However, in practice they seem to allow up to the equivalent of what you are allowed to bring in as the GST free personal goods concession when you are returning to NZ, which is $700.

I have imported a lot of goods into NZ when I was doing up a American car and never been charged custom duty before and when I questioned them I was told anything over $1000.00 including shipping you must pay GST and custom duty on. They told me their is nothing they can do about it as I have gone over the $1000.00 theshold even thou it is only $8.00.They have to draw a line some where.

They have recently dropped to $400 limit, I brought in some MTB stuff at $428 and had to pay GST etc.

The $400.00 limit has been there for a long time. I have imported a number
of electronic items over the years. I have always had to pay if the item was
shipped by UPS or similar courier company. They appear to do their own
customs collections and automatically charge on everything.
If the item comes in by the postal system, then often the item comes
straight through with no GST. There's a bit of luck involved!
About three years ago I bought an item shipped in a 150mm cardboard tube
about 1500mm long and declared at just over a total of $NZ1000.00 using the
USPS. It came strait through with no charge.

I've shipped over a few sets of leathers for my motorbike and the first one came through without GST while the second set did. I think it all comes down to luck.

We'll see how I go with the butterfly brace through customs.

I have been bringing in quite a bit of things from the US this past year, and I have been hit with GST and duty on everything except second hand items and anything under $300 including freight.

Duty I believe is 5% of total value on new car parts.

Some of the places that I have had things shipped to me have put the value on the paper work as only $100USD, which means that I didn't get hit with the duty or GST, but also means that if it went walkabouts, I would be stiff out of luck trying to claim anything.

US Postal service is the cheapest by far to ship, but it can take the longest, 1 item shipped by them arrived in 1 week, another took close to 2 months. If there is duty or GST to pay, they send out a letter to you, which could take another couple of weeks to get telling you what you have to pay (and sometimes you don't even get the letter). You really have to keep an eye on things on the USPS website with the tracking number, and then when it arrives in NZ, call NZPost, they will give you another tracking number, then call someone else with that (can't remember who), and then they give you the amount owing, and then give you another number to call (NZ Customs) to pay the amount, a bit of hassle.

I have a corporate account with Fedex for the smaller stuff that can fit in boxes, and get an ok discount. Trick with Fedex is ship using their marked boxes, not getting it packed in a normal box. I feel into this trap the first time I got something sent, and got a $150USD part shipped from Canada in just a normal box. Cost me $450 in shipping costs!!! Would have been about $180 using a Fedex box, and they forget to mention this when booking anything with them. That's a mistake you only make once. Doesn't cost anything to get a fedex box sent out to the place that is sending it (the Fedex drivers don't carry the boxes, even though the customer services guys say they do, another trick learnt). Flyin Miata use UPS, they are the most expensive to deal with. The last thing I got from them, was going to cost $230USD to ship with UPS, I used my Fedex account, and got it here in 3 days (arrived 23rd Dec) and cost $180NZD

Fedex and UPS both with just send out an invoice (without notice) of the amount of duty/tax to pay, they never give a breakdown of how much the GST is or the Duty, just a total amount.

For the larger things, I deal with a freight forwarder and part ship in a container that is coming over.

If you want, can use my Fedex account, or at least compare costs. If using someone else other than Flynin Miata's shipper, they will charge you another $20USD for handling fee.

I'm using the latter of the options to get it over. I figure freight in a container should be cheaper than trying to get FM to send it over via UPS.

I imagine these braces are long, but weigh bugger all, so imagine that would be the cheaper of the ways to get them across here.

surprised you just didn't get someone to make them up in NZ, would have thought it would have been a lot cheaper, and not that difficult to make up.

Just an update on the package value - GST charges issue. $400 is definitely the limit (if you are unlucky). I got clobbered today for $107 charges on a $470 package. The wording on the Customs form was 'Your mail item has been assessed as liable for GST and/or import duty of $60 or more', which equates to a package value of $400 or more.
The annoying thing about it was that I placed two orders to keep the value of each to a minimum, but they combined the two orders into one 'to save me postage costs'. GRRRR
