Is my NA govened?

Post by WideOpenThrottle » Sat Sep 17, 2011 6:17 pm

Was just talking to my son about my upcoming Pukekohe track day & we got to thinking that my car might have a factory govenor just like his Skyline did.

If thats the case then am i limited to around 180k top speed regardless of the turbo & piggyback ECU?

So does any body know if i will hit 220k down the back straight as i have a speedo that goes that high?

Will be a big disapointment to max at 180! :(

Wow I wish my motorbike was that easy to derestrict

On the plus side I know my MX5 will never hit those speeds. Kind of sad that a wee 250cc bike was faster...

I'm running 12psi on my 1.6 and I hit 209 last weekend, running out of gears at that point though (6spd + 4.1diff) top speed sans turbo was 162

You shouldn't have a problem with an aftermarket ECU?
(just re-read and realised you have a piggy back)

When are you going? I'll be at puke again in a couple of weeks time and it'd be cool to see another MX5, especially a turbo one! :) Got to do my clutch next weekend though otherwise I'd be at HD on friday :\

Not too long, I spent a day at Hampton Downs on my Bday last year (July) that was with completely stock 1.6, just did tyres and brake pads/fluid.

Shortly after that came coil overs, 6spd, roll cage, seat/harness and semi slicks. Had three days at Pukekohe this year which were good but the long straights aren't fun with stock 1.6 power.

Now have turbo + torsen diff and have tried to get to the track three times since then but.. first time my downpipe cracked after two laps, second time I had planned to go after fitting the diff but had issues with the halfshaft contacting my exhaust so didn't make it, and finally made it in turbo form just the other week which was awesome but incredibly busy and a bit intimidating with 4-5 serious 'V8 Supercar' type things blasting past me constantly :)

My clutch is slipping but even so, with the turbo it's a completely different car and no longer foot to the floor 95% of the way round the track..

I would like to revisit HD but it's significantly more $$ and Puke is nice and casual.

Nice video-so you're a bit of a novice like me then as i have done one full Taupo & two small track days in a standard NB & one small track day at Taupo in my white Turbo with so much rain i should have taken the boat instead! - also done Hampton Downs in a 320hp R32 skyline but with crappy tyres.

I can't do HD in my white car until i get roll-over protection :(

Yes definitely a novice.

I didn't have any roll protection in the MX5 when I was at HD, They said they'd prefer that I had roll protection but didn't insist, I did have the hardtop though.

This was at one of the Public open days, I thought it was just that you need to have a rollcage+harnesses if you carry a passenger?

Ive done a few trackdays in the Mazdarati. Only at Puke with stock 14s and Supercats, no other mods apart from a few braces. Will be good to see how much faster I can go with decent tyres and better brakes.

I love the track, even being the slowest car there is fun.

Playday on Track now require roll-over protection for open top cars such as Mx5's.....Fair enough too!

The MX5 Club Driver training weekend is helmets only.

I used the hardtop at Hampton Downs and no one said anything...
What times were poeple doing?
I managed a low 1.20 on a stock MX5 with small mods at Puke. Can't remember what I did at Hamptons or Taupo.

How recently were you allowed a PlayDay event with just the hardtop Growler?

I have never kept track of my lap times-long as i am having fun thats all that matters at the moment! :D

It wasn't a playday event. I just went along to a public/test day and raced with the big boys...

My fastest lap at pukekohe non turbo was 1:20.3. That's with semi slicks, coil overs and good brake pads, stock 1.6 engine.

So far with the turbo that has come down to 1:13.7.

I like recording some lap times because with all the mods i've made to the car it's interesting to see what has actually been effective.
