Dash rattle

Post by tonys1100s » Sat Mar 05, 2011 8:46 pm

91 NA, recently developed a nasty rattle that sounds like it's coming from the dash, around the steering column/instrument panel. It's a light, mettalic rattle. I've pulled the dash shroud and instrument cluster, plus the plastic 'skirt' piece under the steering column, plus the centre console, stereo head unit, a/c controls etc etc and cant find anything loose/rattley. With all that stuff out, the rattle is still there. It can be heard very briefly (just one 'clank') on start up, and if I put my head under the steering column and listen carefully at that point, it almost appears to be coming from behind the carpet adjacent to the transmission tunnel. Have listened under the bonnet on start up and cant hear it, and it doesnt seem to come from under the car either. Had the car up on a hoist earlier today to have the steering geometry set up, had a look underneath and couldn't find anything obvious. Driving me nuts! Anyone got any suggestions?

dash rattle

Hi,
Could be your bonnet rattling - it often sounds like its coming from somewhere else. Try winding some tape around the catch and see if that makes any difference. Good luck :P

Grove box?
A heat shield for cat converter under the car? - this is close to the transmission tunnel.

My car has rattle after a bump, that is coming from exhaust system as if I shake the tale pipe I hear same kind of rattle.

Good luck for find it.

I have a seperate small rattle from the glove box, so I know it's not that, have already removed the cat, so not that either! Plus you cant hear it from outside/under the car, just inside, seems to be coming from almost right under drivers feet! Arrrgghhh!

Found it!!!!! Had a new clutch fitted a couple of months ago, the mechanic hadn't bolted on a small bracket that supports the wiring loom to the corner of the bellhousing, the bracket had gradually rotated round the loom till it was resting on a small 'shelf' below the clutch master cylinder. Which is why the rattle seemed to be coming from around the pedal box. Just reinforces my reluctance to have 'mechanics' work on my vehicles!
