sr20?
Yeas indeed it can be done, there was a red one for sale on TradeMe back in
2006, I just got back from overseas and was on the last day of the auction,
so I missed out
I talked to him at length, he was asking $8K. He was
running the SR20DET with a Link piggy back ECU, at full boost was getting
350 RWHP. Down side was he had to use the Nissan gear box so the gear shift
sat off centre. The Engine is tall so the bonnet needed an extra lump in the
middle. He had a lot of shudder and vibration problems during the build and
claimed the answer was going back to an organic clutch plate. I can't recall
if he had to modify the tunnel for the gear box or not. I do know he had
done all sorts of conversions and he did comment it was a bigger job than he
imagined.
Try Google but use Miata instead of MX5 as thats the USA and Europe name for
the MX5. And Japan they just call it a Mazda Roadster. Good luck it would be
a fun car with no traction

Re: sr20?
With a '90 diff, definitely. The 1.8 diff is stronger and is apparently good for about 250hp as long as you look after it.cua317 wrote:thanx guys so if it gets that much power u would have up grade the dif 2 wouldnt you? would a rx7 fit in?
There is some info here on interchanging diffs.

My Ideal MX5 Repower
1. Get a front half or crate motor 2.3 Mazda 3 MPS Turbo engine
2. Buy a NC MX-5 and swap the 2.3 Turbo engine into it
3. Fit the 2.0 from the NC into our NA8C
mmmmmm............{dreaming}

Yup, Tony owns the red one with the SR20DET in it. He took me for a spin in it at one of the playday events and it is a very very fast car. Not the sort of car an inexperienced driver would want, thats for sure!

why not just fit an 1800 motor and turbo that. An 1800 high compression motor has the same volumetric efficiency as a "turbo spec" 2 liter engine. the only difference is that the 2 liter will be less prone to knock at HIGH HIGH boost. Having been in Johns 1800 turbo car with over 260WHP i can say that that is as much as you would EVER need in an NA mx5. SCARY SCARY car.
fitting an SR20 is just a waste of energy and money for not a lot of extra HP over a turbo'd 1800. Just a lot of W*NK factor really.

sr20?
Yeah but I think the SR20 will be much more drivable than an 1800 with a big
slow spooling turbo, I've heard some of the 300HP MX5's have 2 stage digital
control, 1-4000RPM...hmmm OK.... 4000-7000RPM OMG......
One down side of the SR20 is the weight, the whole deal of the MX5 is the
50/50 weight split, stick in an SR20 and you're probably going to be nearly
60/40 or worse. An SR20 has been done so it will lose some of it's WOW
factor, I met a guy recently with an SR20 in a Starlet (I think it was a
Startlet, it was something really small that should have been a front wheel
drive).

There are a few old (RWD) race Starlets around with CA18DET power, which was the predecessor to the SR20DET. Then there are Toyota 4AGE and 3S's, V8s and another one with a Honda F20C (S2000 lump) which sounds absolutely fantastic. Oh and a couple rallying with Suzuki Hayabusa bike engines too, people will drop anything in those things!
The engine conversion I'd be tempted to do with an MX5 (if I had the spare cash, time and skills) is the Mazda KL-ZE 2.5V6 - sure you can get more power from a turbo easily, but IMO a nice revvy 200bhp V6 would suit the nature of the MX5 perfectly. And I'm told it even weighs the same as the B6, whats not to like?

u have to disagree with you there poison, like i said before the high compression 1800 has the same (if not better) efficiency than the sr20 so off boost drivability and spool will be better on the 1800 than the SR. the only place the sr20 will shine will be at really high boost where knock comes in to play. dropping in some GTR rally spec pistons will even up the game there without any hassle.
i know that the sr20 MX has had shit loads spent on it to get there and the engine itself isnt that relaible.similar results could have been made with engine work on an 1800.
370RWHP in a mx5 road car is just stupid. you would have to be SOOOOOO careful with your right foot that i bet itd actually be slower than a less powered car on the road due to traction issues.
lets face it. the mazda B6 and BP engines offer a package that is suitable for 99% of HP addicts when boosting. why reinvent the wheel just to have a nissan engine in your car. why not just buy a "sacked cefiro" and be done with it.
