Post by johngalt » Mon Oct 05, 2009 6:47 pm

:? Hi guys, I have an annoying rattle on the passenger side behind the dash and glove box, up towards the windscreen. Anyone had this, I climbed up under there best i could and couldn't find the problem.

wip the glove box out then take it for a drive if it still makes the rattle then it could be the fan or ac duct there are little metal clips that hold the ducting to the fan and heater controll one might have come loose

also you can try the scuttle panel at the base of the windscreen on the out side as this little plastic beggar can rattle like a Texas snakes tail. Also.... the bonnet hinges will make a similar noise.

annoying rattle 93 mx5

I may have the answer. My NA used to drive me mad with the same thing, I
can't remember where I got the answer... wait found it.... on the original
MX5 email list/forum Nov 04. I was also convinced it was way under the dash,
way over on the passenger side.

Anyway it turned out that this was a very common issue with the... wait for
it.... bonnet catch.... The fix for me (and many others at the
time...Slydit.. you were in on this one) was to wrap tape around the bonnet
catch, it would last about 12 months a time, and wow what a world of
difference.

Making matters worse but to a much lesser extent, was worn bonnet hinges. To
fix this I added foam tape on top of all the bonnet stops front and back.

Good luck I hope this is your answer.

Check out the picture of the old POISON (1989 NA) in the MX5 POWER & POWER MOD SECTION. Hope the car does not rattle to bits with the bridgeport 13B. Must be time to change the tape. :)

:) Hey guys thanks for all your advice........
The lucky winner was 'bonnet hinge" only rattled when i had the bonnet down, so a tricky burger to find, when searching. Have solved the problem temp. with a rubber sink plug (kiwi diy) bunged underneath the hinge. I think a trip to para rubber might be in order, unless i forget now the noise is gone LOL Cheers

Yes I think they are for sideways movement but adding some foam tape on them
works wonders.
