Rollbar wanted

I'm looking for a roll bar (not a 'style bar'), the type that's designed to offer some protection should the worse happen.
I see a UK company, T R Lane Fabrications offer a range, as do some of the US suppliers, but really want to avoid paying all that freight cost.
Anyone got any ideas?

Have a chat to Raycroft Auto if you want a motorsport certifiable type roll bar. they have done two that I know of.

Have dropped a mail to Roadsters R Us, waiting to find out more.

It's only for road use, just want to be sure my passengers (particularly my grandson) have as much protection as possible.

Just remember you will issues with WOF as the car should have a log book for motorsport in order to have a proper roll bar.
You would have to be giving it hell to tip one up :lol:

Not necessarily- Cars wont roll simply due to cornering forces, they need to be 'tripped' (i.e. by a verge, ditch etc) and this can happen even at fairly slow speeds....of course if you overwhelm the lateral grip going around a corner, you may put yourself in the position to be tripped, but it isn't a case of 'going to fast around a corner and suddenly rolling over'

Mazline - are you saying that if I get a rollbar fitted then the WOF folk will expect to see additional documentation before passing the car?

This also falls into the current tyre pressure discussion too, many moons
ago I did an advanced driver training course (no smart comments thank you).
Our first task was to pump our tyres to 40PSI to prevent tyre sidewall roll
which can allow the rim to dig in and flip the car when going sideways. This
of course would be made worse by uneven road surfaces and taller cars with
excessive body roll.

All that aside even around town, if you lost control on a corner in the wet
and hit a kerb sideways doing say 30k the forces would be incredible and the
possibility of a roll over is pretty good.

And lastly that roll bar design is pretty cool.

Poison,

I've lowered the pressures to 26 front and 28 rear, based solely on Mazda info on door jam. Recognize the sense in your comment re wall 'stiffness' though, so may well look to increasing this. Difficulty is knowing what's the best pressure to take into effect grip, tyre wear and ride comfort (though with the RSII that's never going to be a plus point :D )

WRT the TR Lane bars, they did a club special for a UK group and I'm talking to them I was planning on posting here to get as many folk as possible interested and look at a special on shipping. I'm going to be in the UK briefly in 4 weeks time so I'd planned on getting in to see the factory.

Let me know if you think it's a go'er.

But that seems crazy!

If I leave the car without the safety of a rollbar then the WOF folk are happy, but if I spend to have a safety enhancing rollbar fitted I get penalized?

Crazy, stupid, ridiculous and all those things but unfortunately true. I was refused a warrant because the authority card didn't have the competition seats listed (full roll cage, competiton belts all installed and acceptable) so got around that by putting the stock seats back in and returning 30 mins later, very sore they were too, because they knew that 30 mins later the competiton seats would be back in the car, which they were, and MSNZ told me they didn't have to be listed on the authority card anyway. (Even stupider than that because if you front up with a full roll cage, as my 5 has, with stock seats and competition belts you'll fail scrutineeering because the shoulder belts can slip off your shoulder in a crash and leave you unsecured, however it was accepted as safe in that state by the warrant people!)

2 ways to go. For the roll bar you need either a registered engineers certificate (on the appropriate form) or join a car club and get a log book which has to be used a couple of times a year I think to maintain its currency. For most people this isn't worth the hassle so certification is the way to go

Oh and then go talk to your insurance company and see what illogical things they say!

Thanks MN,Thats the way i understand it,Plus MAZDAD,you will also have the issue of Airbags.
Early cars with no extras are always best to do stuff like this too.
In all honesty don't worry about it unless you are really going to drive like a mad man,I've had one of these cars at work rolled over and it didn't even bend the windscreen rail.
Mazda poured Millions in designing these cars and were never going to get away with selling potential death traps all over the world.
In my opinion ,Just get out and enjoy it while we still have fuel to put in them :) .

It used to be really clear, so of course they had to change it. When I got
my LVV Cert for all the other bits late last year I was told the style bar
does not need to be certified as it's behind the drivers seat. The bar you
are looking at seems to be the same.

There seems to be a lot of confusion here...

If you fit a roll bar in the standard position behind the seats it DOES NOT need to have an authority card from MSNZ. It only requires a card if its a full cage OR if you are actually going to compete in MSNZ sanctioned events.

Bolt in bars are ok but they have to meet certain criteria such as mounting plate size, bolt type and some geometric criteria.

I am pretty sure you dont even need a cert for a bar as it doesnt actually mount in the "passenger compartment" and doesnt come in front of the seats.

I would love to see those "approved" roll bars that were made up for the racing series that never made it.. id like to copy the design for my car..

below is an aussie "brown Davis" bar which is motorsport approved in australia BUT NOT in NZ as the muppets at MSNZ are not flexible at all when it comes to actually being able to get a bar in a car,other than the way they want it.

Oh and one of my car racing in august...(need some sway bars! LOL)

What SLYDIT has said is correct from what I've been told aswell. Due the fact that it is a roll BAR not a CAGE it doesn't need any sort of certification or MSNZ authority card.

And what about the car having Airbags as well?,As the car this is being talked about ,NB,Not a NA ,Which is nice and easy to play with.
Mazdad,Are also saying you are prepared to cut upholstery and carpet to do this and you better see what your insurance co thinks about this,Cause if in the the worst case you did fit it and had to do a claim and they did not know it had a "rollcage" ,Because if you had accident that bad to make use of the cage the airbags are bound to go off,They will laugh at you and probably tell you to go away .
Something to think about and check,Love to know what they say :)
