Compared to a NC it probably would be considered smaller,More like NA size?! 1.6 turbo,YEE HAA !! ,retro fit !
I recon they should just let the current model die and replace it with this.
Like all makes and model next generation car's always grow beyond what they started as.
There's my 2 cents worth, I like it :)

Agreed Brownie, just call it a Mk2.6 and get it out there now, especially that 1.6 turbo with 160bhp :D

Perhaps the next MX5 will be bigger to suit the American market leaving the MX2 to replace the original (NA) MX5. If fitted with the 2.5 litre SP25 motor which has 21% more torque than the 2.0 litre MX5 it would suit auto trans down to the ground. Incidently NZ Autocar road tests have the SP25 marginally quicker to 100kph than the 2.0 litre MX5 despite being 172kg heavier.

Mazda have done a frankly amazing job keeping the MX5 as light as its current generation is given all the extra safety features it now has to carry, and the subsequent component upgrades required to support those features. Not to mention that there is probably alot more money in the psuedo luxury 2 seater market than in the stripped bare lightweight roadster market.

Any changes that Mazda make to the MX5, they will need a 'base car' which can either be marketed with no options as a lightweight no frills version, and also fully loaded as a more luxury oriented roadster. Not an easy task!

According to the September issue of NZ Autocar an MX-5 concept will be shown at the Frankfurt show. The text reads: "This is the lightweight MX-5 concept from Mazda that will be seen at the Frankfurt show. Said to display the design direction for the next-generation model, it was penned at Mazda's European design studio and will be the first of several MX-5 concepts. It focuses on minimalist design, superior driving dynamics and low CO2 emissions". Looks to me like my NC with the windscreen removed and different head rests!!
