HKS filter...wet or dry?

Post by Greenracer5 » Sun May 17, 2009 9:48 am

Hi
we just replaced the filter that came with Nick's car to another of the same HKS brand.
The trouble is we're not sure if we need to 'oil' the filter. The HKS web site isn't very clear, and they don't appear to sell fluid that would be for that use.
So:
It's a dry (fresh from the packaging) green foam filter with 2 different density foams. The packaging says SUPER FILTER (I had to laugh) with the number 200 underneath...just the same as the pics of the replacement filters on the HKS website.
They talk about dry 3 layer and wet 2 layer filter elements, but say nothing about whether it should be 'wet' before insertion (ok, settle down at the back, there)or what it should be 'wet' with.
I've searched, not only in here, but also with subaru and nissan owners forums and the information is scarce and confusing.
Any of you technofolk have any ideas?

Ta,
G

Hi there, I know from experience with working "Japanese VolksWagons" AKA Subaru, that you never use oil type filters because of the pesky hot-wire air flow sensor that Karc's it when contaminated with the oil.

I would go by my own experience and that,

HKS Foam= no oil
Paper or strand= no oil (unless OEM ie Toyota, Suzuki)
K&N, simota, Fram etc = Dependent on operating environment, mostly no.

Simple really, lots of dust... then choose an oil type filter or fine filter for the application.... and thats talking offroad or dusty trail! Circuit is best suited to dry foam or pod.

Hope that helps

Thanks for that. It was what we thought, but you know how it is when you get conflicting info.
It's on now and we tried it out today...car's still running :D

Cheers
