what engine have i got?

hi....

can someone tell me how to identify which engine i have in my 2002 mx5 from Japan..... is it the BP-4W or the BP-Z3???

is there markings somewhere on the engine?

where does it say?

Hi

Normally that info is stamped on the back of the cylinder head where it is difficult to see.

The 2002 should be the Z3 engine with VVT. The VVT engine has a different cam cover with the VVT actuator mounted on the inlet side near the front of the engine.

Not necessarily. you could have the 1600 motor. The VIN plate will tell you, NB6 for 1600 or NB8 for 1800.
The 1600 has the coil pack on the exhaust side, the 1800 is on the inlet side. The VVT's have the coils between the plugs (I think)

Thanks for the info guys, I still don't really know though, i guess i'll have to drive into a Mazda dealer and hope they can tell me.
