Hardtop ok for motorsport?

Post by sparkle » Wed Jun 25, 2008 9:07 pm

Hi guys,
new member, wondering if you can get away without rollcage in NZ clubsport motorsport if you have a hardtop?
Anyone know?
Cheers
Sparkle.

For dual car circuit sprints, you can't, but I suspect for motorkanas you could.
Your local club scruitineer is the one to check with (or an email to MANZ tech dept) My club says that the hardtop is not a roof as such in the sense that the MX5 remains an 'open' car - a softtop or hardtop making no difference as the rollover protection they provide is minimal.

If it is a bent sprint or a closed club event you should be OK.
Anything above that you may have issues as the hardtop is not an integral part of the roof. As a minimum you would need a half cage. (Main hoop over the driver with back stays).
A hardtop does "tighten" up the car to a point but the only advantage with having a hard top is aerodynamic.
