if your planning on thrashing your car DO NOT get a 1600 diff of any type.....they are only 6" diffs and are pretty weak.
You need to get an 1800 diff and shafts, as the 1800 is a 7" diff and is much stronger....There is no such thing as a 1600 torsen diff..the 1600 LSD's are viscous..

the torsen is only available in 7" 1800 size

you can also fill an 1800 housing with a series 4 or 5 RX7 clutch type LSD .

well if a diff in a 1997 1.6 has rubber dampers on it, does that make it a torsen or a viscous?

Well if its out of a 97 1600 then id bet its not an LSD at all...the 1600 engine package in the post '92 cars was a low spec model so id be very very suprised if the low spec car had been fitted with an LSD.

well in the diffguide that jif just showed us, it shows a 1.8 diff with a rubber damper on it, indicating its a torsen lsd

the 1.6 i was looking at has the exact same rubber damper on it

does this make it a torsen lsd?

cheers

You can "Just" see through the oil filler hole with the car jacked up and a small torch. 15-30mins screwing round trying to see through the hole is better than pulling it out. Jif and Slydit are the Diff guru's here.

Ah NO. Having rallied and raced my 1600 for 4 years now where its had a pretty good hammering, the standard diff is absolutely fine. However I agree I wouldn't replace it with another when it goes always better to step up.
cheers,

Mark

there are a few who would disagree on that....up the power and add sticky tyres and that 6" diff is on borowed time..it it false economy to replace a 6" diff with another if you plan to give it heaps.
