My uncle, Racing Ray Williams, owns a rental business in Auckland City.
He has two MX5's with beautiful english-flag paint jobs that would make
you feel right at home depending on where you're going to be in NZ

I pass a place down on Quay St, Auckland, each morning, they have at
least a couple, I will make some enquiries.
Nice to make the acquaintance of another "Hitch-Hiker" by the way.

There is also an outfit on Quay Street called I think, About New Zealand,
which has at least one MX5. It's probably the same one I rented 6 years ago!
Visitors should be aware that most rental MX5's are elderly 1.6's and some
are automatic. They should also be aware that an elderly vehicle is nothing
to be ashamed of in NZ!
On behalf of the ex-Scots on this list I should point out that Ray Williams'
cars are actually painted in the colours of the Union Flag rather than the
St George's Cross. One wouldn't want our poor visitors to be associated with
English football hooligans, would one...

Well, at least it is not in Scottish Nationalist colours!
Yes, About New Zealand is the place I was thinking of.
I did a quick look around the web and found this site
http://fourcorners.co.nz/new-zealand/pr ... ctID=35001
I see there is a UK Toll Free number which Terry could ring himself.
Their original Google listing says that they have the MX5 in their
fleet, even though this page does not. They have an office at Auckland
International Airport.
Just remember Terry, we are 12 hours ahead, so you might have to ring
them during your evening
Regards
Eric

Sorry to correct you, Eric, but Terry might need to know we're actually 11
hours ahead right now, not 12.
Current NZ time can always be found on that most informative of websites

Passing on thanks for the information on this... Gratefully received
as it's rather difficult to find information on Mx5 hire anywhere...

Hi All,
Many thanks for the replies about changing the gear boxes. Seems like
the effort would not be of benefit. On the aside, in my youthful days,
I owned a '79 Cortina Ghia which I had a 5-speed Celica gear box
installed (along with a few other mods). It made huge difference to the
performance and required little modification.
I also shifted the window rubbers outwards on the roof and have finally
fixed our leaky roof! The only problem the Wellington weather has not
produced any heavy downpours to test the system fully. 5 minutes under
the hose produced no leaks. We are still looking at replacing the roof
but at least the pressures off!
Thanks again everyone
