I'm coming down from Auckland to New Plymouth next week on business and
hoping the weather will be good enough to enjoy the roads around Taranaki.
Plan is to arrive Tuesday evening, do a business lunch on Wednesday then
head east-ish along the most interesting roads. No plan where to stay Wed
night but need to be back north of Auckland by 6pm Thursday.
Anyone with local knowledge got any suggestions as to the best MX5 roads in
that part of the world? This is to make up for my chickening out of the
Coromandel run last Sunday when I reckoned that t would be more enjoyable to
go and sit in the washing machine all day.

Taranaki Roads
Stratford then Whangamonona (although still has a little gravel) road is a good honk
Wanganui then ParaParas; turn off at Kakatahi onto Fields Track also recommended
Maybe go down via one & return on the other?
The roads up the mountain are great too
And yeah I remember a very twisty road that cuts through a park area on the north west side of the mountain; dunno what it's called though sorry

Yes it is Carrington Road, and it extends around much of Mt Taranaki.,
passing the world class Pukeiti Rhododendron Trust, acres of rhododendrons
planted amidst native bush.
The road is a brilliant drive. Another good drive is out on the Junction
Road from New Plymouth, through Inglewood, and out to Tarata saddle, thence
to Tarata, then left out to the coast down the Otaroa Road, through a
hsitoric road tunnel, back to Highway three near Waitara.
Actually Taranaki has literally hundreds of good drives, because it was well
serviced for roads due to the dairy industry from very early times.
