You may wish to consider other work that may be required to be carried out
at the same time.
As I had my cambelt replaced along with; @115,000 km
1. belt tensioners rollers
2. all the seals
3. all the other belts
4. rad. hoses
5. the water pump as if it failed in the future you still would have to
remove the cambelt to access
the pump.
.. and had the front discs replaced and the seized rear brakes repaired
and bleed.
That costed $1,500!!! major budget blow out. The quote for just the cambelt
only was approx $500.
But at least it was a job well done, and no one complains about good quality
workmanship...
remember... if it's cheap... will they know of the associated problems with
earlier NA models which had camshaft failure as a result the incorrect
manner a certain 'pin' is re inserted the wrong way around?

They are not email strings. In email groups they are called threads. THe only
reason why many post at the top is because Microsoft have so dictated in their
lame Email clients to do so thus moving away from the Email convention.

Yep Perry is correct, I forgot about the tensioner pulleys , I got my
done at the same time, a good price from " Road and Track " in Lower
Hutt, {ask for Kevin ,tell im Jeff sent ya lol} and "Collins auto parts"
also in the hutt will do the seals etc at a good price, {ask for Dennis
tell him you are an mx5 member} .
I just checked my receipt for work done it was $270.00 labour including
gst for 6 hours work to do the whole front end basically ie: belts,
seals, pulleys, pump etc.

I used Mt Eden Motor & Panel Services, 488 Dominion Road Mt Eden Ph
630-2213. Murray's the owner & still remembers working on my car...
probably because I photocopied all the info re: cambelt replacement and
potential problems.
Tom, the owner of Auto Clutch recommended him after he sorted out some
cambelt problems for him. I have to admit I paid more than I expected but
no one ever complains about a quality job.
The only thing I have to sort out is how to adjust my fuel air fix as the
MX5 is running a little rich, gauging on the blacken spark plugs. Any
pointers???

There is no easy way to adjust your mixture. If your O2 sensor is good then
you need to suspect your Air Flow Meter (AFM) calibration. I'm assuming
your air filter is good and that you are not burning oil which may make your
plugs black. The best measure of your mixture setting (gross) is your fuel
consumption. Are you getting the mileage you should? MX5 is not that
economical so you need to ask around to see what you are getting for your
type of driving for your model.
The 1.6 AFM can be adjusted but need to be done with the assistance of a
dyno.
Don't leave the problem as a truly rich mixture will wreck your bores.
I have a device that is made from a Jaycar kit it will give you a rough idea
of mixture.

I have just installed a Jamex foam filter & have new split fire spark plugs.
(Could the plugs be too hot/cold?)
I do mainly very short trips as I only live 5 km from work so I get only
400km out of a tank (1600 cc 1991 model)

how old is your oxygen sensor?
Alternatively your airflow meter can be 'recalibrated' - I think Don
did some tinkering in this area ..?

mixture is verified as being OK on the Dyno.
I would suspect your plugs. Modern unleaded fuels do not produce a white
exhaust. Soot is all you get out the back. Yep I'm around over the break
so Email me if you want some help.
