Speaker enclosures
A while back I recall a brief discussion on enclosures for audio
speakers and the what and whys regarding them.
Can someone refresh my Alzheimer memory and give me a repeat synopsis? I
want to use a small plastic tub (from some oysters I bought as the
enclosure for my new headrest speakers.

Jeff what would be the effect of cementing/adhering the speaker to the
tub without "stuffing it with anything?

Hi Bill,
I did post a note remarking that quite a few years back I used a couple of
round margarine tubs for this purpose, That worked fine

Too complicated for me. Perhaps I'll throw a few "cotton balls" in the
empty space and "cross my fingers" :>)

Hi Bill
'twas I, and I used some 75mm PVC down pipe I used a hot air paint strip gun
to heat it up then push it onto the back of the speaker (as about 5mm too
small) and let it cool in place. The pulled off and cut to length. I then used
the heat gun to roll out some flat pieces, cut these into circles with
scissors and glued them to the back of the PVC tube and there you have a semi
ideal (small but sealed) enclosure. The sound was MUCH better with the
enclosure, could get much higher volumes without distortion.
Good Luck,
Gazza

PS: I'm on the shore too if you need a loan of the heat gun.

I'm going to go with the plastic tubs I have/ am getting. Probably not
as thick/ridged as your boxes so more possible vibration but assuming
they are held securely in place with all the surrounding foam, I'll give
them a go.
Would appreciate some assistance with the installation if you would be
open to that possibility? (or assistance from anyone else that has
installation experience/knowledge)

To add unnecessary info Vas is the equivalent volume of compliance. But
these little bug*ers aren't going to care about this. All you want to do
is lose the back-wave so the bass doesn't cancel, it will drop off, but
a speaker that size can't really make any bass anyway.

the polyfill acts to increase the volume that the speaker "sees".
Greater damping effect, or somethink...

speakers typically have an ideal enclosed air volume which complements
the speakers' physical/electrical properties. IIRC the figure to look
for on the box is Vas.
hope that helps!
