Oil / Filter advice please (was RE V on bonnet and key)

Hi,

Wondering if anyone can give me their recommendation for oil - my brother
suggested Mobil 1 however last time I looked I wasn't made out of money,...
does anyone recommend any particular brand or is there a specified one?

If it makes any difference I have a 1998, 1800, manual on 140 K's

hi nicky.
firstly - i would strongly recommend you use a genuine mazda oil filter.
most garages use cheaper inferior ones, and they are simply nowhere near as
good. the filters are about $23 from a mazda dealer if my memory serves me
well.
even the jiffy lube or AA quick change places will let you bring a genuine filter
and use that instead of their house brand.

Sounds like you should just put in whatever fits your budget, and the
specs in the manual, then change it at least every 6 months/5k km.
Seriously.

I put Castrol GTX in my lovely wife's MX3 (or should that be Autozam
AZ3??). About $20/4litres.

Mine has Amsoil synthetic, changed annually! I'll probably step down
to Mobil1 next time tho. What can I say, it's a guy thing...!

On my last change I used Valvoline 10w40 from Repco, which was about $35, seemed
like a good price to me.

On a related subject, finally found a filter removal gadget that works. It's a
sort of three armed spider thing made by powerbilt that you mount on a socket
wrench, and as you turn it anti-clockwise the arms clamp down on the filter.
Needed a rag over the filter to get the needed traction but it was a _lot_
easier than anything else I've tried.

Simon, who is the retailer for this filter clamp, please? I'm fed up with the warm oil running down my arm when I use the big screwdriver method! Grubby oil in my armpit is not fun!

Just came back from Supercheapauto Mt Wellington... that Castrol GTX
(20w-50) is only 12.99 and 20% off filters! The Mobil1 is $10 off
too.

No affiliation, etc.( ...and sorry to that guy that works at Repco,
have to say you guys seem pretty expensive now, at least around
here...)

So that's about $20 in total for an oil change Nicky - just get your
brother to do the labour for ya!

I got mine from Repco in Palmerston North. You could also try the Toolshed if
there's one near you, as they're Powerbuilt stockists and know their stuff.

I think "Great in limited space applications" perfectly describes the
requirements for filter changing on an mx5...

I have just got a copy of the Wheels Dec 2004 Australian Mag. Page 14
has a bit of a write up on the new MX5.

The 2litre motor would be nice but an electric hood would only add
unnecessary weight.
