Thanks for all the the comments. Just to clear up Gary's concern about selling via the list, I rang Lou and he gave me a list of 3 reputable dealers to contact, 1 of which I have now booked in with to have an alarm fitted. The help was appreciated as we can all quote bad experiences and this is the beauty of the list!

Yep, of course... but Lou works for the distributor, so although he was
being helpful to you he pointed you to one of their resellers and made a
sale...
This is different to Lou saying "I have a such and such alarm, and am
really happy with it, and I got it installed by so and so and they were
really good" with no association between himself and the vendor.
Anyway I'll butt out... its something for the moderator to rule on, not
me.

Hi People, We are new to the list, having acquired our 94 Eunos Roadster on
Wednesday and sent off our Club Application the same day. We found Automotive
Security Systems through their radio ad on Newstalk, received thoroughly
professional advice as to what our Insurance Company required (a Mongoose,
with microwave and immobiliser), and a competitive price. Their two installers
turned up at home today, precisely at the appointed time, did a neat clean and
expert installation, explained the alarm in a way even I could understand and
left the car clean, tidy, and with no detectable sign they had been there. We
could not have asked for more. So I am happy to give them my vote on this
subject.

this is interesting, now when i got my insurance in jan ,i got a car
alarm(dynatron) without microwave sensor as i dont really leave the top down
and also because i have 2 small dogs who i leave in the car occasionally. they
dont set the alarm off. but with what you are saying there perhaps now if my
car is stolen without microwave sensor ill be in a loop. does anyone think ill
be all right?

We are with AA Insurance, and they were quite insistent that that was the only
way they would cover the car, they required both microwave and immobiliser.
However, with the dog issue, there is always the point that you can, with a
Mongoose at least, turn the microwave off if you leave the dogs in the car.
I guess it comes down to what your insurance contract says, if it specifies a
certain type of alarm and you haven't got it, then you are probably in the
"pooh", but if it doesn't then they can hardly insist on it during the term of
the contract.

We're with AMI and while I think they asked if it had an alarm that was all
they wanted to know...as to what kind...they didn't seem to care ... I
wouldn't have a clue as to what kind it is either
Cheers Joan H

Unless your insurance co specified a microwave sensor, you should be OK.
Having said that, not having a microwave in a convertible is a false economy.
The first thing a thief will do is slash the roof, to avoid opening a door. A
good dual zone microwave will give warning chirps when anyone approaches to
within .5 - 1 metre. This will deter most opportunist thieves. Well designed
systems also have a facility to turn off the microwave only if you leave the
dogs in the car. I'm not sure if the Dynatron has this feature, check with
your installer.
