mx5 in the snow

hi,

as an ex-pom I can describe how mx5s go in the snow...

...not at all

they might perfect cars in every respect, but in the snow they're totally
useless. Even the slightest covering and all that happens is you do
doughnuts - problem is too light, wide fat tyres and too much power (well
perhaps not in a 1.6 tee hee hee)

I had to abandon my mx5 twice in the snow north of Manchester and when
friends brought me back the next day to retrieve they couldn't believe how
the car still couldn't drive on even the slightest covering of snow on the
road...buses, trucks, even ladas (total humiliation) were cruising right buy
and I was just spinning circles

still I'm sure an F1 Ferrari doesn't go so well in the snow and who'd want
to drive a Toyota 4x4 ute every day...bugger that eh!

yeah, as an ex-pom myself, I can't belive you left it north of manchester
and went back the next day and expected it still to be there :p and you'll
find that 1.6's don't differ greatly in power (espec. when modified)... you
whining pommie git.

Ahhhh! Snow in England...
Memories Memories - I am sure you guys from Dunedin would be happy to send
some up here for me, but there will be on our mountain here in Taranaki - so
I won't try driving my MX5 up there by the sound of it!!

I've got more than 50000 winter miles that say you're daft.

You MUST put four snow tires but once that's done, the car is BALANCED and
REAR WHEEL DRIVE. It's the greatest car in snow I've ever driven*. It's a
delight to go snow dancin'... even with 280+ rwhp.

BALANCE is the key word. Weight only becomes a factor, a bad factor, when
it's not balanced.

While heavier vehicles may start better, their mass makes them harder to
stop... and driving in snow is about starting AND stopping AND changing
direction.

And if it's too deep for the Miata... NO CAR should be out there.

* vehicles lived with in the snow incluse full size Ford Bronco's,
Oldsmobile Toronadoes (original), Chebbies (a '57), Mercuries, trucks and
vans... and even a Lotus Europa (which did just fine - if you know how to
drive in snow).

so do you have a trailer as well to carry the 4 extra snow tyres about with
you - I don't think many of us buy snow tyres for the one or two days every
few years we get may get caught in snow

No, I have an extra set of wheels and leave them ON the car. Use the
Pirelli Ice Directional.

It boils down to ITS THE TIRES - NOT the car, that's your problem.
