What sort of price do used hard tops sell for generally? There was one on
Trade Me yesterday, that did not reach it's $2000 reserve. Does $2k seem a
little excessive?

Did you see the movie The Castle ... "Tell 'im he's dreamin'!"

Generally advertised around $12-1500. We sold our 1990 hardtop about 2
years ago for I think $1300.

I think Mazda charges either $2000 or $2500 extra for a hardtop on a
brand new car!

Hi Lyndon. Yup $2,000 is way over the top. I have seen hardtops sell from
anything from $600 to $1800. Around $1200 to $1500 for a good condition hard
top is about going price. Price can depend on whether it has heated rear
window and lined as against the plane top with no heated window or linning
and whether it comes with all fittings or not. Colour of top also has a
bearing on price. If you have to get it repainted to match your car work on
$200 - $250 pls GST.. Red hard tops are very hard to repaint to another
colour as the red can bleed through.

Just received a "Fixed Price Offer" email from the owner to sell the top to
me for $2000.

I sold a hardtop last year for $700 as I had two.
It was a black textured one with factory dark tinted window.
Does anyone have a photo of the lining of their hardtop or any idea where I
could get one?
I have searched the net.
I would like to put a lining on mine and also has anyone had any experience
with getting a heated window fitted to a non heated hardtop.
Just wondering if my Emails are getting through as over the past couple of
years I have been subscribed to this list I have only posted twice but have
not had any responses to either the last one being a few days ago asking
about which blank on the dash is for the power mirrors I have just purchased.
Regards Danny

hi Danny

it might be because not many people have power mirrors - most of the
early models are non-pwr. Anyhow, mine is the right most panel -
there's a L-R toggle and a joystick thingy to move the mirror.

heated window - you can buy the heater element from places like Repco
and just stick it on . Personally I use the Rain-X/Fog-X stuff as I
haven't hooked the connector up.

For the other person - the HT was $900 about 6 months ago. It's heated
and lined ... and green ;-)

Hi Danny, hope you get this ok. The hardtops with linning are a compsite
linning which is part of the top and not an aftermarket accessory you can
buy. I have purchased some 3mm boot carpet from an upholster that Iam going
to cut to shape and glue on the inside. I dont have the heated window and
wouldnt bother trying to find one that you could put on and have to try and
wire up. 10sec with the heater blowing through the vents clears the window
real quick.

Hi Nigel
Yes your right. It was just I have the wiring all in place and the connector
all ready to just to clip on.
Thats a great idea about the lining.
I am just a lot more passionate about this car than any of the others I have
had.
This is my third one and just getting a bit addicted to adding accessories
etc.
Am in the process of trying to find someone to make me a padded cover for it
to store and hang up in the garage as they are very expensive to buy
overseas and I have not got the room for a stand.
Will let all know if and when I can find someone to do this.
I thought about contacting the person that is selling and making the rear
deck bags and sun covers on Trade Me.

Danny

I made a simple (read cheap) way of hanging our hard top in the garage
above the car - it worked quite well and was easy for two people to lift
on and off.

Let me know if you want some info on how I did it.

Hi Dan
You could suggest to the person making those bags to look at a HT cover. I
bought a HT cover a couple of years ago from MM marketing USA for about
$US35 I recall. Fits nice and protects it while hanging on the wall. In
fact I haven't had it off the wall since I bought the cover :)

Hi there Ian
Thank you for that.
I remember some time back seeing a type of hoist that someone had made that
you could raise and lower for the hardtop with a pulley but my garage is
like nearly two stories high. (I live in townhouse with garages attached to
others) and tricky to arrange some type of hoist.
I would probably be better to hang it on the wall. Was thinking about
putting in a second floor in the garage but that is down the track as time
money and health permits.

Hi Danny, MX5's are like a drug, have one - need more - I know I have been
addicted since my wife bought the first one.

Try Paul Bryant (advert in back of Topdown) for a cover as he is now
making, sun covers, boot bags and boot cover bags and has just bought a 10th
Anniversary Blue that has a hard top and he is talking of making a cover to
protect it. His products are top quality.

Lyndon,
$2000 for a hard top is excessive, I don't care how good the condition is
alleged. Prices range in the $900 - $1500 bracket. Grab the first one
available & you'll probably have to paint it to the colour of your car.
Factor in about $350 for a good, no-evidence-of a-spray-job. Pay a little
more than $1500 for a factory top in a Ltd colour option, with the rear
defroster & headlining. Hope this helps tyou in some way

Hi Nigel
Thanks to everyone for the amazing resposes.
Yes I wondered if anyone would start to make boot covers.
I would have thought there would have been a lot of aftermarket ones
that resemble the factory ones at a reasonable price but there dont seem to
be.

Hi Carl
I didnt recognise your name at first and then realised you are responsible
for getting me hooked on everthing thats "clear" for my MX5.
I bought the clear markers off you. Since then I have purchased clear tail
lights and want a clear led brake light side repeaters and front park
brakes. Have also just bought the Brainstorm Performance Low profile
Headlight Kit but am awaiting replacement lenses as the fittings for three
of them on arrival were very poor so sent them back. Huge gaps aroung the
reflector and glass lense so they are not on yet.
I hear they are not entirely street legal but the new ones are full
adjustable height left right etc so might get away with it if my warrant man
doesnt look too closely.
I have a black 93 S Special with a black interior.

Many thanks for all the response. I already have a hardtop (that I never
use). I thought that the $2k price was a bit 'cloud nine' and wondered what
the rest of you thought.

Hi Dan
So you are hooked. I should send you a pic of my MX - clear all round except
for the high break light. Actually check eBay UK, I was searching there this
morning and there was a clear LED brake light. Once on eBay UK just search
MX5 and you will find it.
Are you going to Manfield?

Cheers

Yep I would love a pic.
The high level LED brake lights are also available from mx5mania.com.au but
they are $170 Australian dollars and I think way too expensive. About the
same to land from UK too.
I saw one on E bay but it was for a mark2.
Ross from MX5 mart was looking possibly into findind a way to make one.
I would be interested.
I know hella do a high level led brake light that I had thought about
adapting at $47 but the clear lense is only 115mm long and the mx5 lense is
190mm.
I know as I have it sitting on my floor at the moment.

Sorry didn't answer your question.
Would love to do something like that (manfield) but my health doesn't permit
me to travel much anymore.
