Brake Light - Bulb Replacement

Hi fellow MX5 owners,

This may sound like a silly question, but has anyone had experience
replacing the brake light bulb in a '98 model MX5? One usually expects to
find plug or cap that readily detaches from the rear of the fitting, inside
the trunk, to reveal bulb housing etc.

What I found was that I have to remove the entire light fitting to get to
the bulbs - apparently. Of course the problem I am having is getting the
'entire fitting' off. I have removed the two nuts that hold the light
assembly to the car body and the screw in the black surround section at the
top. The light assembly moves but I cannot get it off, can't see any
obvious thing stopping it and am reluctant to force it lest I break
something.

Help!!! Anyone know how to get it off to change a blown bulb?

Hi Brian,

Yip, I recently had to replace the rear brake bulb on my 98 MX5 too.

Sounds like you already removed the rear boot lining. Once you've done that
and removed all the screws there should be a small plug (from memory in was
incased in a white plastic capsule) that you do need to apply a bit of
pressure to to remove.

I have Konis and the King lowering springs, with the Konis still on
full soft after about 3 years. They get cranked up if I head out of
town where they definitely feel underdamped (floaty) over 99km/h

about 1/4 to 1/2 turn from full soft fixes that !

Around town of course, the roads are a bit too bombed out not to have
it set to soft ...

But they are still working well otherwise (compared to our worn out
'91 MX3), I suspect they are a smidgen softer compared to new tho'

Tim,

Thanks mate. By 'small plug', do you mean the plug with the cabling or a
small white plug that looks like it should be covering a screw thread,
located in the lower left area (looking forward). I have also located a
'fat' black plastic plug on the side wall that is apparently connected to
the light assembly.

No probs! I meant the small white plug. It should just pop out with a bit of
force.

Actually, not that you mention the fat black plug, that could be the one
that pops out also, sorry can't remember exactly which one it was. Once you
have all the screws out all you should need to do is just press it out.
