Transmission Chatter/Rattle:
Am chasing my tail on this problem with my '91. Happens when the transmission is unloaded such as when you change to lower gear and
back off in most gears but 5th. Disappears when you load it up again (accelerate) and can be 'played' on the throttle. Can be heard
inside and outside car and progressively getting noisier. We have checked diff, drive shaft and gear box. Even replaced two main
gearbox bearings but zero change.
Did a clutch some time back and there has been some dialogue in the USA Miata Net forum about replacement clutches causing something
similar.
Can anyone offer advice or do they have similar?

The damper springs in the clutch plate can cause this noise, broken
spring(s) particularly.
Selector forks can also do it, but if you load the selector by applying some
pressure on the gearlever you can determine if that is the source of the
noise.
Light pressure on the clutch pedal will eliminate the release bearing and
fork.
Thoughts for today, (see you sunday?),

The noise is a harmonic in the driveline between the
diff and gearbox... Its not the clutch or heatshields!
Best bet if youve tried the gearbox is to replace or
reset the backlash on the diff.
The 1600diffs seem to be more prone to it because of
the size.
The usa guys get it when they put in lightweight
flywheels as the harmonic is created within the entire
driveline system.

Hi everyone, I have been keeping in regular touch with Mazda NZ as ed of
Topdown.
Last email I got today indicated 200 has been passed and looks like 250 on
day expected. TV and other media will be there. Helicopter has been hired as
that is the only way go get a photo of all 250 cars.

Peter, I have the same thing on my 91, I havent investigated it yet, my
best guess is that it is a worn thrust washer in the gear box, on the main
or layshaft, where the shafts are up close to the gearbox case chattering,
mine has no noise in 5th under any circumstances. Dosnt always happen, but
may be getting more frequent.
Only other thing it could be is a loose baffle in the muffler, causing a
semi metallic rattle or chatter when the back pressure and vibration is
just right... or vibration through the entire exhaust system, caused by
thinning of the material, problem with the old catilytic converter ( if it
has one), the flexible woven section or a failing bracket or stay.
I was going to check the exhaust first due to a small amount of scottish
blood in my geneology , add a bracket maybe, road test... After that...
I seem to recall a thrust washer problem in my past, they often dont get
replaced, even with a major gearbox repair, sometimes have a case hardened
surface that gets worn away.. some are brass or brass coated, havent looked
inside an mx5 box.. failing that I was going to turn the stereo up and box
on. It is definitely not the clutch spigot bearing, they go from nothing to
a loud squeel in no time.
If you knew someone with a spare gearbox, you could chuck it in and see if
it makes a difference, ok silly idea...

Good one! I'm soo ready for it!!!
My question is what happens if someone pulls out at the last minute?
Like I'll be forced to do if it's hosing down
... world record or not... I'm not gunna risk myself or my beloved car... my
top's leaking so I can picture nicer scenarios than driving to AKD from TGA
and back geting soaked and having fogged up windows... (aircon or not)

Thanks everyone re-sent and now acknowledged.
While I think about it does anyone have an adzest radio/dvd etc in their car
and or does anyone know anything about them. I know the TV Sat Nav and DVD
won't work here but the radio and CD are fine and it looks great,BUT I wish
I could re-set the clock which still thinks it's in Japan.(incredibly
accurate though) If so maybe we could meet up when I come up.Have we any
Japanese speaking members?

I think that one is a press and hold the clock button till it flashes then up
and down the hours with the channel keys then press it (clock) again to do the
same for the minutes.
Picture would help confirm model of course!

I had some wheels(Motoform Euros) polished on my honda
and was about $300..(plus removing/refitting tyres.)
looked great though and the only maintenance required
was a quick go over with autosol when polishing the
car every 6 months.
Dont get them powdercoated or clear painted as the
finish will be dulled and long term it can peel off
and look rubbish. Just look in the yellow pages under
metal polishers or ask someone like Mag and turbo who
does thier work.
