The NZ new vs Jap import debate depends on your use of the MX-5. If
you're looking for an every-day driver, gear like air-con, power
steering and fizzy windows is good to have.
If you're going to have a weekend fun car, the early NZ model with
manual steering and no extras has an entirely different character.
Kick-back through the steering wheel, for example. There's less weight,
less to go wrong and it's often easier to fix when necessary.
The basic sportscar has more charm as a fun car, less as daily
transport. Red is good, too.

Except not ever Jap import has those features. My import doesn't have power
steering nor the electric windows.
cheers,

My NZ new (late 93, 1800) has power steer, power mirrors & windows but no
air con.
Changing from power steer to manual steer is favoured by those preparing a
car for track use. The reason is a weight saving and one less accessory for
the engine to drive, as much as for the improved feel (from what I have
read).
I have 2 road tests of NZ new MX5s, by the same tester, about 3 yrs apart
here in NZ. In the first, he says how glad he is that NZ spec cars don't
have power steering. In the second test, he says the power steering is
excellent!!
