It whistles ......

Post by GEEMCB » Fri Sep 15, 2006 4:53 pm

Just noticed a wind whistle on my NA coming back from the Snowball.

Seems to start at about 55kph & is there whether the roof is up or down, windows up or down. I can't see anything obvious dangling where it shouldn't - spoiler still afixed, aerial down etc etc. & no other obvious changes.

I know I can just turn the music up, but has anyone had this & solved it properly ? Got me stumped .....

Greg

Hi Greg

Hard to find, I had a whistle on my last company car, tried taping up every crack and gap with no success. But if your car does it roof down you just need a quiet road where the passenger can stand/sit up on the seat and move around to at least get a direction on the sound. I'll give it a go if you want sometime. Oh and take a roll of 100mph tape (AKA duct tape) so you can eliminate as you go.

It's the bloody wipers! they harden over time and the edge closest to the A-piller lifts creating a whistle effect... had this happen to my old mercedes... :D best of luck!

Hi, Gazza & Shermio

Thanks for the comments & suggestions.

Nope - not the wipers - they're new & quite flexible anyway, but I can see how that could cause problems.

When in doubt go to the non-original stuff or things that you've put on yourself - in my case the front lip spoiler. OEM polyurethane which obviously fits as it should - except for the 1 - 2mm gap that had opened up between the top of the spoiler & the bottom of the standard bumper.

Thanks to Gazza's suggestion of tape (I used that purple low tack masking tape to minimsie chances of paint damage), a process of elimination around bonnet, windscreen & spoiler finally located the source of the problem. Makes sense if you think about it, but if anyone else has to track this sort of thing down it's the small gaps that do it.

Now all I have to do is fix it properly & get rid of the "BRG with purple pinstripes" look. Uggghhhh.

Greg

Reduces your ground clearance.

What do the spoiler do.....????

The spoiler do make car car broom broom look good...

Sorry I just couldn't resist.....

I have one on my NA and IMHO it looks great (and MHO is always right so there:twisted: ), but i don't like them on the NB as it looks like an add on that do  not belong there, although the full aftermarket replacement bumper/spoiler's all in one can look great.

there were some comments a few years ago from a couple of US & European
MX5 people (who have been around a while...) that the front lip spoiler
did give some better high speed steering stability. This was as
measured on Germany's autobahn at around 190km/h+

Apart from that, yes it makes your car different to everybody else's,
which is a goal of many MX5 owners (and car enthusiasts worldwide) I'm sure.

Grant's quite right - ground clearance is reduced, which can be a bit if a challenge especially if the car is lowered (as mine is). Makes it even more important to get a polyurethane (?) one - fibreglass is a tad brittle. However, I can still manage to get in & out of most places OK provided I don't have to tackle things head on. Not had the possum problem though ...

I'm assuming that aside from the aesthetics, the Mazda bods did their aerodynamics & that the spoiler will improve matters. Mine has ducts which (theoretically) direct more air onto the front discs. Not having a spare windtunnel in the garage I've no idea. I'm also aware of the stability argument - mine certainly wasn't worse after fitting & could have been better - but that may have been wishful thinking.

Anyway - personal taste (as in most things) is a prime factor.

Greg
