Valve/Cam Cover Bolts - Torque settings

Post by mikey » Thu Aug 10, 2006 7:28 pm

Hi all,

I need some advice on torquing up the cam cover bolts.

The manual states 43 to 78 in-lbs, however I keep snapping the screws off when I go to torque it up. There is of course a little oil around however i'm getting no where near even 10 in-lbs before one of them snaps!

It took Mazda 2 weeks to get in another set of 11 after the first one snapped a couple of weeks back so I have plenty now to experiment with. Unfortunately i've gone through 3 tonight trying to get it sorted.... and i've had enough.

Help!

You sure you are not getting inch pounds and foot pounds mixed up on your torque wrench?

hi, Mikey

I've often found that some of the torque specs seem to be quite high - sway bar saddle bolts etc

When I replaced my cam cover gasket I used "guestimated feel" rather than spec torque. Not very scientific I know .....

I did tighten things up according to the sequence in the Haynes manual which took many iterations to complete. Part of the issue was the gasket maker I used in the gasket groove squeezing out a little as it bedded in.

Hope this helps ...
