Engine splash guard? Does it improve cooling?
Hi All
My car is missing the plastic engine splash guard that sits beneath the engine, does anyone know if removing this helps cooling or just makes the engine get dirty.
Cheers
Gazza

In theory, it helps to direct the post-radiator air out under the car instead of looping back in front of the radiator. In practice it doesn't make much difference for non-boosted MX5's ... ;]

What Gazza is really saying is... he's got a boosted MX5 now. I'll doIn theory, it helps to direct the post-radiator air out under the car

Hi Jeff
Thanks for the welcome back, and thanks Howard for "blowing" the surprise
I gave up on doing the install myself also I wanted a car with less Km's, so all the bits and pieces will be for sale soon (Turbo, Manifold, Downpipe and ¾ of exhaust system, Miata –Link ECU with both NZ and flyin Miata Chips, injectors, EGT Gauge, etc, etc…) .... watch this space (or at least watch TradeMe as we're not allowed to sell stuff here).
I can't see how the splash panel could improve cooling as there really isn't anywhere for the air to get out the back. Will come and visit you for a chat soon anyway.
Has anyone got one of these lying around that they don't want, can pay small amounts of CASH
Gazza

IIRC the HKS FCON *might* be one of those products that is meant to be tuned by an HKS authorised, and *trained* dealer... my memory's a bit flaky right now ... but I think that's what i saw when lurking around some Supra forums.
If that's the case you might want to hang on to that FMLink, and do a parallel install (ie it does the timing/fuel, stock ECU does all the other tricky stuff, incl dash gauges !!). Some JDM-fanboy will snaffle up yr FCON on trademe, I'm sure

Talking to my guru associates (and they both think quite highly of mx5's by the way so they can't be too bad ), they both seem to think the HKS Fcon-series were good.
From what I have gathered so far the mini may be a "pre-Programmed" car specific device sold with various HKS bolt on kits. Quite possibly detuned for a little bit of safety rather than full on power. But who knows since then as in Japan they have access to all the tuning gear we don't.
There seem to be two schools of thought, those who are pro the full replacement ECU's and those who are pro the piggy back method. The bonus of the piggy back is better running at varying altitudes and air temperatures, ie; none of the famous Link cold running and retuning/re-tweaking issues. I'll admit the link is one of the things that put me off doing my own set-up, mainly trying to find a tuning shop around Auckland that seemed to know anything about the Flyin Miata software.
The pro's of the full ECU replacement, IMHO the Link is clearly still best value for money. And for all out perfomance tuning a full replacement ECU can't be beaten.
On an NB there is no restrictive AFM so the benefit of using a Link is less, but on an NA the Link rocks as you can get rid of the AFM. I also read that Link now do a Turbo plus (I think it's called that) which is a piggy back system and seems to be a good compromise.

a small point - a full replacement ECU on an NB would need to drive the alternator, dash gauges, VVT etc ... the Hydra seems to do it, and the AEM might too. (Best to leave the stock ECU doing that stuff )

A new method that is becoming popular on NB's is the fitment of an entire second fuel rail and injectors to the inlet manifold and firing them via a piggyback ecu such as the emanage. this means that all the stock driavability is retained with enough fuel for over 300HP.Oh and by the way the stock ecu will throw a fault code if you boost too much(over10psi) with a NB as it throws an excess airflow fault. An emanage can clamp the airflow signal so it doesnt occur.
