Just try a few drops of baby oil [works wonders so i am told-never tried it]!

Like most additives how does one quantify their effectiveness-quality oil & regular maintenance should be the main prority! :D

What are you two talking about, simply 2 emails, is there a thread, some
initial info on the discussion?
Got me, nothing but the two entries on a page on the site, got me

never heard the one about baby oil? I agree about the oil change etc but this stuff is ment to clean all the carbon build up in the fuel system, and engine. So its not really an aditive more of a cleaner.....oh and cleans the inlet manifold as well.

Sea foam?

Post by jif » Fri Dec 16, 2011 11:35 am

SeaFoam is used to de-gunk engines, so if its pinging more than it should that'd be the time to consider doing this.

I used to just spray water into the engine (with a spray bottle, not a hose !!) after the airfilter and with the revs up as this has the same effect.  And then change the oil afterwards.

Prob about as harmful as driving on a foggy Waikato morning ;)

I use an STP oil flush every few oil changes, works a charm, especially the first time, all kinds of gunk ends up in the waste oil.
Also, I find that if I take the car for a quick thrash after adding the flush, to really get the oil pressure up, it seems to clean a bit more thoroughly.

Although, I must add, that it says specifically not to do that on the bottle....

Also, Pro-Ma MBL8 is your friend, every oil change.

I did on my 1.6 although it's been a lot better since I pulled all of the lifters out and cleaned them. Not a fun job though and one of them is still ticking.

I've used ATF as a flushing oil in the past. It's basically just a thinner oil to get into nooks and crannies to remove crud.

Yeah I used that, hasn't done much for mine. I'll try the pro stuff, if that doesn't work then I'll put a weekend aside and do the annoying bit.

Sea foam is the brand name, it's not actually sea foam, haha. I've used similar stuff in a few different engines over the years, found it to be pretty good. Especially in engines with the rocker cover vents plumbed back into the engine (for emissions). This eventually builds up on the throttle butterfly and around the intake valves.
Cool sunroof bro...

I believe Subaru's Upper Engine Cleaner is fairly similar.

Id avoid this kind of stuff if I were you. It will do nothing to remove any coked on deposits or glazing in the combustion chambers, and will have a limited effect, if any at all on removing built up oil emulsion in the induction tract.

Better bet is to dismantle the induction as far as you feel comfortable, and use a damp rag to clean it.

Carbon deposits in the engine will only be removed by rebuilding the engine, and do very little to hamper engine performance in our road cars anyway.

Don't know about sea foam but we used to use mineral hydraulic oil poured gently into the carb (yes I know .... I'm OLD) and it cleans up the combustion chamber and piston crown bloody well.

As for lifter ticking........try running a good grade of diesel oil for a couple of hundred Kms.....they have more detergents in them, I've done it with a few cars when I've first got them to clean everything up. My old NZ had chronic ticking (not just when cold) when I got it, oil change to diesel at Taupo, drove to Palmy North and changed oil and filter never had any problems from then. Owned for 6 years with regular oil and filter changes.

Just my 2 cents worth :)
