miata boss kit

Post by glanzav » Tue Jan 15, 2013 2:09 am

hi. i have a NA miata and i want to change my steering wheel to a smaller aftermarket one so i won't be driving it with my knees. but my factory wheel have a airbag.
can i still use normal aftermarket mx5 boss kit on my car or do i have to source a different type of boss kit since i have airbag on my factory steering wheel.

and if any one has one please let me know.

cheers

Depends how old your car is, look at the cert threshold guide for details.

I can't direct you in terms of what boss kit you'll require, but you will require LVV certification for the removal of your airbag steering wheel.

First. Welcome to the interwebs.

Second, if you do not spell or use correct grammar on the interwebs you will have a bad time.

The warning is there..

Yes you will need a certification as your wheel has an airbag.

Search the internet for a daikei miata boss kit they are the best and from what I hear the least painful to install also comes with a circuit to stop the airbag light from showing constantly when you remove the factory steering wheel

But yes you will require a cert for it

Well you are removing a fairly important safety feature. You have to do it properly and put in a sticker stating that the airbag has been removed and to enter at your own risk.(entirely from memory so may not be 100% right)

could you argue that with a rollbar in a crash a airbag is likely to push the drivers head into the bar and on the street you will not be wearing a helmet?

One of the grounds upon which you are able to remove airbag (i.e. if the car is not at least 14 years of age) is if the vehicle has been extensively modified for motorsport use. Your reasoning seems relevant to that, although on that basis you may require authority cards and the like...

But any NA and early NBs are able to have airbag removed anyway on the basis that they're at least 14 years old.

Lolololol look at all these guys jumping on the 'YOU NEED A CERT' buzz. I don't think he asked whther he needed cert, he's asking which sorta boss kit he needs to buy to change his steering wheel.

Hahaha classic.

a standard wheel boss will fit. also you need to take out the airbag light. also note that the boss kit for the standard momo/sportline wheels has a different wheel bolt pattern to the Nardi wheels.
removing an airbag from an airbagged NA doesnt make it unsafe...it just makes it as safe as nearly every other NA mx5

Most bosskits have both patterns on them do they not? my nardi bosskit also has the momo pattern on it weirdly enough.

Your boss kit was probably made with both patterns or has an adapter plate bolted to it

Have you tried the standard factory boss? Early mx5 came standard with a momo wheel
