Spare wheel relocation
I had mine done here in Blenheim more than a year ago. My car already had an
aftermarket exhaust system on it with a small rear muffler, so all I had to
get done was the rear muffler moved and the pipe relocated to make room. The
original MX5 muffler is too big to do this. A heat shield was fitted to the
muffler as well at the time. This work cost me just less than $100.00 from
memory. It's well worth the effort to probably double the usable boot
capacity!
I can email you photos of mine if you like.

Spare wheel relocation
Weve done this mod to both of our 5's as well, but included a new muffler
each time. Total cost was $145 each car. No problems with the heat near the
spare either. A thoroughly recommended, if not essential mod.

Spare wheel relocation
miata.net has a photographic example which I used to show the guy a Pit Stop
when I had mine relocated.
I had a high flow muffler fitted at the same time which I recommend.
Also, I recommend using threaded rod and bolting this with large washers and a
lock nut inside the boot. I used a 10mm rod. When I went for my WOF they asked
me to put an r-clip through the threaded rod as they thought the nut I had
might vibrate loose.
Hope this helps!
Got a lot more room now, a throaty exhaust with better performance and a lower
centre of gravity at the rear. A worthwhile thing to do!
