Short Nose Crank broken in dunedin

Post by eadz » Thu Oct 02, 2008 4:42 pm

Hi there,
I have an early 91 MX5, and after a gradual, then sudden loss of power I took it to the garage. They pulled the engine apart and found the worn woodruff key and crank nose.

I am looking to get the loctite repair done, and I would like to find someone in Dunedin who has done it before.

Alternately, if anyone has the tool used to keep the crank pully in place I would really like to borrow it and I'll get my normal mechanic to do the repair.

Or, would it be cheaper to swap in a new engine? Anyone have any recommendations on where to get a good engine?

I have done 5 engine swaps for club members including my own. That was the easiest fix. When I did mine it cost me $857 which included the engine, new clutch, thrust bearing etc and the standard flywheel lightened and balanced. (I was lucky - I found an engine that had only done 32,000k!!).
On average it takes me around 15 hours to pull an engine out, swap the gearboxes over, put the engine/box back in and fire it up.
You could loctite the pulley on. That does work but not permanent. At least you still get to drive the car.
You could drill and dowel the pully onto the crank. - but really need a machine shop to do that.
