Hardtop clip screw size?

Post by MrGrey » Thu Jan 31, 2013 6:59 pm

Here's another of my random questions...

the lids on the shackles that hide the frankenstein bolts (that hold down the rear of the hardtop) are a little loose and I would like to stop them flopping open by putting some countersunk screws in them but am unsure of the screw size.

does anyone know what size they are? both a 4mm and 5/32th's screw felt like they would fit but i didn't want to force them and shag the threads in the shackle (minor oxidization means that even the correct screw and thread will be tight)

I am referring to the single screw hole shown in the center of the pic.

any help is appreciated =D

You might be surprised at the price from Mazda for the OEM part...if it's still available....

I mean it won't be a few cents but even at $15.00 for the set it beats wrecking it with the wrong screws....

Just a thought.

I just bought 4 of the nuts that go on the underside of the hardtop latches for about $20 bucks from my local Mazda dealership. They got them in from Japan in no time.

The screws wont cost any more than that, and as Mad Kiwi said, it'd be better to use the OEM parts so that you don't damage it. I think the nuts are a special size that you can't go and grab from Bunnings or the like, so the screws may be similar.

They are nothing special....borrow one from someones hardtop, :D and Blacks or a specialist fastener supplier will match it...suggest using a stainless one and being countersunk, a 'blind man would be pleased to see it' !

great suggestion Ian, but sadly I don't know any other mx5 owners here so I will give mazda a call tomorrow and enquire to how much an OEM set would sting me for.

Hardtop clip screw size?

You should be able to get these from Blacks Fasteners in stainless for less
than $3 a pair. The screw as measured from my car is: Stainless CSK 4mm x 0.70 pitch,
thread length 9mm.
There is also an option for allen key drive as well
Hope this helps
