Geoff,
IMO, depends on your type of driving, budget, plus what you want from tyres.
I expect the Goodyear ones you are talking about are Eagle F1 GS-D3. If
that is so then IMHO they are excellent in the wet, great in the dry (not
excellent, thou not far from it) and seem to wear ok. Plus are less than or
about $200 each fitted / balanced in NZ.
here are the survey results from the tire track.
http://www.tirerack.com/tires/surveyresults/max.jsp
you can see details here on their own tests.
http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tests/gy_f1_gs_d3.jsp
have not tried them on the MX5 (yet) but we have done 20K kms on our Subaru
WRX and they are excellent.

Have Toyo T1S Proxes all round and don't believe you can get a better tyre! Quiet and boy do they stick. Not cheap unfortunately, I think they retail around $250 each but I got a demon deal on mine. They look nice too!
Good luck

The Toyos are a great tyre. I bought 3 sets when I was in the UK as they
worked out at $80 NZ each (incl UK delivery & 17.5% GST).
I shipped them to NZ in our container of household stuff when we moved back.
The NZ prices of tyres are nothing short of criminal. I guess it's all
about demand, supply & low volumes.

Geoff,
np.. I hope u like them.. yep ours are german as well.
We run them at 34 fr and 32 r on the wrx (215/45/17") if u don't have an
aggressive alignment then u could run a chalk line across the tread in a few
places and drive a few Ks and see if the line is off on the out sides (too
low pressure) or just gone in the center (pressure too high) may help to get
the pressure right for the car / tyre combo.

Hi Mike
Will try the chalk line trick thanks.
Do have a week off so plenty of time.
Will be taking the MX into Mazda just seems a bit flat on Monday they think
it may be the plugs last changed at 30000KM just clocked over 45000km
running at the moment NGK 2262 ZFRF-11
so they can put it on the diagnostic box and check everything out.Any body
cheaper than Canterbury Mazda in CHCH they quote $60 an Hr plus parts think
I Get 15% of parts
Kind Regards
Geoff

Regarding tyre pressure, wen you quote values, do you mean cold, or after
the tyres have warmed up as much as they will? Do you think that it is
significant just when you measure the pressure? - given that in all
likleyhood they are measured warm, at a service station.
Thanks
