Ok hopefully that got your attention ...
This is not in any way an attempt to sell anything I am about to buy some
bits for my car from the states cause they are just plain cheaper over there
but freight is still a huge factor and buying more than one item usually
doesn't mean paying twice the freight so im hoping to reduce my costs by
adding to the quantity and saving anyone who wants to get in on this some
serious money at the same time.
Parts I am currently aiming to buy :
Rear "combat" wing alloy evo style dual plane wing with both planes
separately adjustable.
Cost NZ 4 - $500 cost US $25 Freight US $93 total cost landed NZ $165 approx
at today's exchange rate.
Aftermarket heavy duty coil springs, set of 4 complete with top and bottom
seating pads AND 4 alloy threaded pieces which fit the std shock giving 3
inches of height adjustability without the need to remove the unit from the
car or use spring compressors to adjust them.
NZ price Expensive US $ 25 Freight US $140 NZ landed price $230 approx.
I have already negotiated a discount for volume with this supplier, but I
only have one mx5
Supercharger Hide it in your air box and just press the button for a couple
of pounds of boost
NZ price $1000 US $ 170 ( includes freight ) NZ $240 approx.
Body kit Aggressor kit ...nearest I've seen to a veilside kit without the
veilside price
NZ cost $1500 plus US $ 170 Freight US$ 350 NZ $720 approx.
Add-on performance chip Fits outside the computer and comes with 2 mode
settings std and performance for up to 20% improvement.
NZ cost Not Available here $US 25 Freight $US 20 NZ landed $63 approx.
If you know of any of this available locally with pricing close to this of
if you are interested in any of these items for your car please let me know.
Thanx

Hi Garry,
Couple of things,
"A couple of pounds of boost" won't really do anything much for you, and
frankly, if the device is hidden in the airbox, but big enough to produce a
couple of pounds of boost, it probably reduces airflow through the airbox by
at least that much anyway.
I assume, since you push a button to start it, that it is electric, It would
have to draw quite huge current to produce that level of boost (you would
need to be upping the airflow through the airbox by about 15%) and I doubt
that the standard electrics could handle it, even if it were worth while. Of
course, the extra load on the alternator, to produce that level of current,
would probably rob all of the extra power developed anyway.
I'd keep my money in my pocket on that one!
The "performance chip" sounds a bit dodgy too, I have never seen an
aftermarket one of these that works worth a damn, and there are better ways
of making an MX5 go faster

Hi Rex,
I will reply to others tonight if necessary but i just wanted to say i agree
that its probably easier to do basic mods but i thought that there just
might be people out there who would like the power of the mod, now and then,
with the security of standard settings for the majority of the time for
reliability.
I fully understand your reasoning for the electric supercharger and you may
be right, i guess i will just have to buy one and find out, but consider
this if it draws as much as it makes then how do mechanical ones make more
than they draw.
A couple of pounds of boost is 14% more air in the cylinder and that means
14% more air / fuel mix to burn, add engine inefficiency into this equation
and i would estimate that saying a 20% inprovement in performance was easily
attainable.
So these are not for everyone but i thought they were cheap and easy for
anyone to choose to have on or off without expensive fitting costs or and
sacrafice in reliability.
Thank you for pointing out the short comings of these, anyone thinking about
it should have both sides of the story.

Hey Garry
I think you should buy one. Then if it works I can get one
too, but if it doesn't... bummer! But to be honest if it
works or not, isn't the complete issue, whent the fan is off
it will create a large loss in your airflow system.
I'm also keen to make my MX go a bit quicker off the line
and I imagine the only way is to buy a Mazda 1600 Turbo
engine and try and glue it in. But I imagain it's a lot of
work, although I am thinking its a good winter project. Be
good to meet someone who's done it.

Hi Biff,
Yes thanx checked out aeroteck their kit is a lot more mx5 than veilside and
i want something aggressive that is clearly changed.
This prices were excessive as well over $500 for front and same for skirts
and same again for back so well past 1600 for the kit and i didnt check if
that was including gst.
I havent followed up on spring maker yet other than they state they are of
japanese aftermarket origin.

No sweat, when you get some details on the springs let me know, I may be
interested.
The aerotech stuff is expensive, I have seen it on a couple of cars and it
is a great fit, but your right its not what you would call rad.
They do have a new bit of kit, I don't think its on the web site, it's a 2
piece roof cover for the rear, so when the roofs down these covers make a
flat deck with contours that match the back of the seat, so the front of it
looks like a bell curve (behind the seat) and tapers away to nothing as it
goes towards the rear of the car??
Hard to explain soz

Hi Biff,
Yes i think these look good.
Its called a tonneau cover and if we are talking about the same thing you
can see it on the yellow car at www.cable.net.nz/mx5.html
Found these in the states from only one supplier and they wanted $245 US for
them so i figured i would just make my own.

Hey Garry where in NZ are you?
I like the rear spoiler on the yellow one, and the rear bottom skirt on the
red, the fronts a bit much, mind you if you had the horsepower to match the
look it would be ok.
The side skirts look a bit like the aerotech design, but what can you do
with side skirts without going too radical?
Yep the tonneau is about the same, except the bubble shape is more tear drop
from what I remember, it wasn't cut off across the back like the yellow ones.
The springs look ok, do they give you spring rates?
Cheers

Hi Biff,
Im in welly.
I think the look implies the horsepower and therfore serves its purpose but
i also like that it give an extra few inches of space and air flow to allow
room for later modifications.
The red car and the yellow car both show the kit i mentioned but with
different rear wings.
Havent chased up more info on the springs yet but will do as i get time.

Biff, I bought one of the Aerotech hard tonneau covers 4-5 years ago. To
cut a long story short:
-It's a copy of one originally put out by Rod Millen Motorsport.
-its is poorly made and a pain in the butt to install,
-is so big that all three parts of it can't fit in your boot if it
rains,
-it actually increases the wind buffeting
But, it did look quite nice.
Garry, be warned that cheap fibreglass body kits usually end up becoming
poorly fitting nightmares that require twice the body shop labour to put
right. Also, might pay to check on the legality of that wing before you
import it as I seem to remember reading somewhere that "Fast & Furious"
style wings are now frowned upon. There were a couple of cars driving
around Hamilton a year or so with those wings. The cars are still
around, but they don't have the wings anymore... Sorry to rain on your
parade.
Matt.

Hey Biff long time no chat,
I bought a front spoiler from a guy who never got round to fitting it (or
realised what a bad fit it was) and it was Aerotech and it took a bunch of
glass work to make it fit properly. I know a panel & paint guy who used to do
a lot of body kits, he said the work was huge. The only kits he ever liked
were some from Japan that cost about $4000- and fitted like a dream he said.
The problem with glass is if not well made it warps, most companies do copies
of copies and all on the cheap. Not many can afford to put too many $$$ into
development.
My advice is don't rush into anything unless you get a fitted price off
someone, and again some of them use urethanes and others just double sided
tapes.
Good luck

Hi Matt,
Thanx for the excelent advice re body kit fitment, i am fortunate enough to
have a friend who specialises in glass so fitting will be ok one way or the
other.
I can see your point re the wings but these days when i get pulled up since
im no longer a teenage pushover who doesnt really know what is what i dont
find i have the same sort of negative reaction from the police.
I can easily see that these wings could be forced off a vehicle an the basis
of them being a dangerous fitment but its only a $70 letter from a certifyer
to over ride any opinion some smart cop might think he is entitled to have
on the side of the road.
The answer is always ask what you need certified and then get it and you can
then do anything you like with your car without fear of anyeon being able to
do anything about it, personally i think is all a crock of ... but it does
make sure the car is safe and i like the idea of having a safe car.

I haven't purchased any of the aerotech stuff myself, but the guy did say

There are 2 cars here in ChCh with the complete kits and he offered to get
them to call me, only 2 because they were kits they had fitted, not ones
done by DIY'ers.
How's your various projects coming along, did you get the style bar you were
