Sports Exhaust

Post by thebears » Sat Jan 21, 2012 4:07 pm

After some help as looking to start the next project with replacing the stock exhaust. Not much choice over in NZ so do I import or stay local. Anyone got any good suggestions for a performance stainless exhaust that doest cost the earth.

that looks pretty damned good that one. Ever thought of just getting one custom made?

it's generally cheaper if you go with mild steel. difference between mild steel and stainless steel would be negligible. but the price is a lot better. mild cat back exhaust for all my prev cars have set me back about $800 (and that's pitstop wellington rip off prices)

I've heard very mixed things about Borla exhausts. I'd go with the custom fabrication route personally. Probably 2.25-2.5" would be more than suitable. If you're looking for an aftermarket, ready-made swap, Buddyclub are a very reasonably-priced quality brand.

Have a look at this and do the maths.

Allowing about $200 for freight and including GST and customs clearance it still works out under a grand.

I did look at that one and is on the consideration list.

I bought headers from drift max (on trade me for $300) then had a mid pipe with one silencer made up and a muffler again bought from trade me (jackson racing $150.00 brand new) fitted. headers and muffler were $450.00 and mid pipe made and whole system fitted $500.00. It is all stainless except midpipe. Sounds great and goes good. Give me a pm for any more info needed

Speaking of the RB system, does anyone know if they got the years wrong? They seem to have it separated from 90-95, 96-98.

I have a 1993 NA8C so I assume I would select the 96 option?

If you have a '93 why would you get the '96-98 option and not the '90-'95?

The NA8C and NA6C have different exhausts which I thought were not interchangeable hence my confusion. I suppose it'd be best to ask RB.

they make their exhaust for the chassis not the engine because the 1.6 and 1.8 both use RBs 2.375" piping I think you may get into abit of difficulty if you have a '96+ engine in a '89-'95 as you will need the '96-'98 RB exhaust flange/mounting point and the '89-'95 shape pipe to not interfere with the chassis

I think your better off just going to a muffler shop and getting a quote for a cat back and see what they say mild steel 2.5" cat back shouldnt cost more than between $400-$800 depending on where you go

Get mandrel bends too. A little bit pricier but it's so worth it. You get less tinny noise and it usually feels better across the rev band. I always go mandrel bend now on my cars when I can.

$400-$800 seems rather steep for a mid-pipe seeing as the RB one is USD$180 + shipping (the expensive portion...).

thats including a resonator and muffler from header to exit and the RB is $180 for just the midpipe and its one piece isnt it which means you wont be able to ship it easily at all i couldnt even get some side skirts in from the USA cause they were to long
It would work out to be at least $400 NZD landed Im just saying if it were me I'd spend a little extra and have it made and fitted but I am going to get mine done soon so I'll keep you posted with how much it was
Plus i want mine made to sit as high as possible so i can go lower

Bwarp said he got one from pitstop for $800 and their rip off prices.
I would think a different place would probably do it for round $500

I did that to mine and it didn't cost too much from memory (But then I did do some of the work myself).
I went with 2 1/4" diameter pipe as the cross sectional area of 2 1/2" I thought was too great...and I didn't want to loose too much back pressure.
I swapped the cat with an expansion box (Cherry bomb type straight through muffler) and changed the rear muffler to a V8 Commodore muffler. This is a free flowing muffler and is not too loud, but gives the right sporty note I wanted.
Oh - and I used mild steel throughout - however it isn't my daily driver.
If you are in Auckland theBears you are more than welcome to come and have a look.

Ah I forgot to mention the reason I want a mid-pipe is that I reaaaaaaally like my headers (maxim works) and muffler (mazdaspeed). What can I say? I'm a sucker for brands

I just want a mid-pipe because my exhaust suddenly sounds raspy without the cat but sounded very nice when it was in.

yeah man and that was for a 4 door pulsar (a limosine compared to an MX5)

The welds were shocking quality too.

In that case i would just buy a resonator and take it to a muffler shop and ask them to weld up a midpipe with that in and since resonators are so long it would be about half the length of your midpipe it should cost less than $300 including the resonator

Which Pitstop was that? They seem to have some pretty variable quality among them... I know there are a couple of branches that are supposed to be fairly decent.

The guys in Silverdale are top notch too. Plus they actually seem to be a lot better priced than some of the other pit stops I've been to. They've always looked after me.

I second Punkoutnz and the Silverdale Branch of Pitstop. Hasn't been open long, but they are pretty good up there, and have done some stuff on some of my other cars, and nothing ever seems to be a hassle for them, and they go out of their way to get things done. Good old fashioned customer service, not many places that that these days.
