Not sure about the 1.6, but on the 1.8 you use the early CAS on the back of the head as that is what talks to the ecu. On the 1.8s, the front mounting cam and crank sensors deliver different signals that the older ECUs do not recognise. I suspect the same situation will apply to the 1.6.
On the newer 1.8, the opening for the CAS is still on the back of the head behind the exhaust cam with a removable blanking plate in it. I guess on the newer 1.6 it should be on the back of the inlet cam but you would need to confirm that.

Yep-Euen that sounds logical and i would think that the Crank sensor could be left off as the NA 1.6 doesn't [have one?].
[funny!-my manual says the cam shaft sensor is the crank angle sensor???.........now i am confused? is there such a thing as a CRANK angle sensor on an NA-doesn't look like it, but there does appear to be both on the NB's

The crank sensor is integrated into the CAS. It delivers 2 pulse trains to the ecu, one for cam position and one for crank. They are both derived from the camshaft but in theory the relationship between them should always be the same.
