1.8 Swap questions

Post by Born_disturbed » Tue Oct 18, 2011 11:55 am

After blowing up my B6 i managed to score a 1997 SR Limited 1.8 conversion front to rear, however...

It has no loom and no axles for the new torsen but does have the stubs

Ive been lead to believe that i can use the B6 loom on the BP motor with the BP ECU and use the Torsen and stubs with my standard 1.6 LSD axles

Does this sound right?

Cheers, David.

I believe you need to use the 1.6 injector harness, disconnect the EGR valve electrical & vacuum, extend the crank-angle sensor wires 50 or so mm,use the 1.6 ignition coils & bracket,a longer ignition lead from the 1.6,adapt your throttle body to the 1.8,space the throttle cable or use a 1.8,raise fuel pressure to 50psi,use the 1.8 headers & down pipe with the o2 sensor,[in a nutshell as read from my performance book...............the diff, well looks like it might require someone else to answer tha one! :D

I thought most of that was if you intended on running the 1.6 ECU and AFM?

you can not use a bp ecu on a b6 loom . Because a b6 uses group fire injectors and bp uses sequential injectors , you can ues the b6 ecu.
also the 97s use a different ecu and the plugs don't match.have a look on flyin miata under Technical information it tells you how to do a 1800 swap

Okay so if i get the loom i should be all good? dont see why they are so intent on using the 1.6 gear when they are the same chassis

Re the Diff.

The 1.6l diff is a 6" unit and the half shafts are longer than the half shafts from the 7" 1.8l diff so they don't interchange.

I think the stud pattern for the stub shaft flange may be different also but I may be getting confused with the prop shat flange.

I thought that only the 94-95 model 1.8l diff's had the two piece halfshaft design? reference here: http://www.miata.net/garage/diffguide/index.html

The loom has to be a 97 . To put the whole loom in you have to remove the dash, heater, air con, headligts, bumper, ect . So it is faster and easyer to use the 1.6 stuff or you could use a wire in ecu.

Went and had another look at the diff, it does appear to be a 1997 one and i do have the stubs but with a CV cup rather than a mount so i will need the rest of the shafts..

Thanks for that.

Now to try and get a definite answer on this wiring! lol
