Timing Advance
Hey all, going to advance the timing on the Mazdarati tomorrow, just wondering if it is worth advancing it to more than 14 degrees?
Cheers

According to my MX5 performance book 14 degrees is best for top end power with torque gains in low & mid rpm range as well.
18 degrees is really better for low rpm and requires the use of a higher octane fuel & i would think at high rpm you may suffer detonation issues.

Have run into an issue. The CAS is turned as far as it will go, but the timing marks are on the far right of the scale, close to the T. Any suggestions?
Angreal, from what I have read, the Na8 uses a different setup which is a real pain to advance. most seem to recommend leaving it alone.

Sounds to me you are at TDC as this point is 5 marks to the right of the 10 degree advanced point. NOTE- each mark represents 2 degrees so to be advanced 14 degrees the mark needs to be two marks to the left of 10 degrees.[thats if i have read my book correctly]
Also are you shorting gnd & 10 of the diagnostic box,at op temp & approx 850rpm?
The 1.8 litre requires a 12mm socket to get to the CAS bolt-its just harder to get to than a 1.6!

The revs may drop so adjust back to 850 after each adjustment.
Be also aware that there may be two timing marks on the pulley & the one to look out for should be painted yellow.
Use an inductive timing light.
When you remove the jumper wire the revs should increase slightly[25rpm approx] but no need to adjust again unless maybe you were at 900rpm prior.
A higher rpm makes it a bit nippier from take-off but wastes fuel at idle!

I'd like to know too. Anyone local can do it for me? What's the benefit?Angreal wrote:How does one advance the timing, is it possible to do for the NA8C and is there any benefit to doing it to the 1.8L?

It can be done for a NA8 and I am led to believe there are benefits. I haven't needed to do it as I am using an aftermarket ecu and that looks after it all.
It is not difficult to do and the instructions are here

You need to read the instructions for 1.6 and 1.8 as they are interrelated.
